A Renaissance portal dating from 1543, the landscape of the ĂŽles de Bonny and year-round exhibitions at the Maison de Pays offer different cultural and natural points of interest in Bonny-sur-Loire. Depending on your interests, you can focus on architectural history, the floodplain or local offerings.

Church and local history

The Église Saint-Aignan is listed as a historic monument and brings together styles ranging from Romanesque to Renaissance. Its oldest parts include the choir, the right-hand aisle and the bell tower; they date from the 12th century. The portal of the south transept is in the Renaissance style and dates to 1543. The combination of these older parts with the later-dated portal brings the different construction phases of a single building to life.

The town’s history also reaches back to a clearly defined period: during the Hundred Years’ War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453, Bonny-sur-Loire was a fortified stronghold. The church and this historical context offer different ways to explore the town’s past—through specific architectural features, or through Bonny-sur-Loire’s place in a broader historical context.

Loire floodplain and cycling route

Les Îles de Bonny is a protected natural area in the Loire’s floodplain, between the Loire and the Cheuille. The area includes extensive natural meadows as well as a mosaic of different habitats typical of the Loire region. These range from sandy banks to alluvial forest; this transition gives the term “habitat mosaic” a tangible meaning.

A 4.5 km trail is available for exploring the natural area. Check trail conditions locally before planning your visit. Bonny-sur-Loire is also on the recognized Loire à Vélo cycling route. This offers two different ways to plan your trip: the Loire à Vélo cycling route and the trail through the natural area.

Exhibitions and local products

The Maison de Pays de Bonny-sur-Loire hosts cultural exhibitions year-round in four exhibition rooms covering 160 m². The exhibition program may change, so check what is currently on offer before your visit. This allows you to include exhibitions in your travel plans without assuming that any particular event will be on.

The Maison de Pays also showcases a wide selection of local products. This selection may also change. It complements the exhibition program with another aspect of what the town has to offer.

Activities to plan ahead

Owl Blades offers an introductory knife-making course. Confirm that the course is available before your trip. You can also personalize a knife model of your choice by selecting its design, steel and handle material. Appointments can be arranged for a meeting at the workshop in Bonny-sur-Loire. The course and knife personalization are separate offerings; check in advance which option interests you and what arrangements are required.

A recurring event in the annual calendar is the FĂŞte des vins des coteaux du Giennois, held on the last Sunday in July. The exact calendar date varies from year to year. So check the date for your travel year if you would like to plan your stay around the event.
