Beaugency combines a 12th-century bridge over the Loire with cultural attractions and a natural area nearby. The bridge is more than 400 metres long. At Château de Beaugency, historic architectural features meet immersive light and digital experiences; the Rives de Beaugency add a publicly accessible discovery trail to your stay.

Nature at the Rives de Beaugency

The Rives de Beaugency near the town are designated as a Natura 2000 site. They include the SAC FR2400528 “Vallée de la Loire de Tavers à Belleville-sur-Loire” and the SAC FR2400565 “Vallée de la Loire de Mosnes à Tavers”, as well as the SPA FR2410001 “Vallée de la Loire du Loir-et-Cher” and the SPA FR2410017 “Vallée de la Loire du Loiret”. Since 2019, the Rives have also been a Sensitive Natural Area of the Loiret Department.

A four-kilometre public discovery trail crosses the Loire bridge. One kilometre of it forms a loop through the nature area. This gives you two different distances to choose from when planning your outing: the longer route across the bridge and the shorter loop within the site.

Wildlife is also a key part of the area’s natural appeal: European beavers have lived along the Rives since the 1980s. Common terns and little terns nest on the islands opposite the Beaugency bridge. The trail, protected area and wildlife give your stay a distinctive landscape focus alongside the architecture.

Building history and digital experiences

Château de Beaugency contains architectural features from several centuries. The complex includes the 13th-century Saint-Georges Chapel, numerous 16th-century doors with preserved Carvet mouldings, 15th-century roof timbers and a Renaissance façade. Reconstructed original stained-glass windows can be seen in the listed section of the building. The different dates make the building’s history tangible through specific details, rather than reducing it to a single era.

The Château de Lumières at the château presents permanent immersive exhibitions as well as light and digital experiences installed there. This cultural experience brings together historic heritage, digital art and emotional impressions. Exhibition content and programming may change. This allows you to combine a visit to the historic architecture with a digital exhibition theme, while recognising that the two offer different kinds of experiences.

Other buildings offer different points of interest: Tour César is a square keep, about 36 metres high today and one of the last surviving examples of Romanesque military architecture. Notre-Dame Abbey Church features Romanesque architecture. The 11th-century Romanesque Church of Saint-Étienne is now used as an exhibition venue. Together, these sites offer a comparison between religious architecture, fortifications and exhibition use.

Routes, season and getting there

Beaugency SNCF railway station is an eight-minute walk from Château de Beaugency. This refers to the route between the station and the château. For cyclists, the La Loire à Vélo route follows the right bank of the Loire towards Beaugency; conditions can change along the route, so check them before setting out on a stage.

The Labyrinthe de Beaugency is a seasonal activity. It is set in a four-hectare maize field, where visitors solve puzzles as they make their way through. As it is a seasonal attraction, check opening dates before your trip.

The Rives offer a clear choice between the four-kilometre discovery trail and the one-kilometre loop. This makes it easy to plan a visit to the nature area as part of your trip.
