Saint-Germain-Sur-Vienne offers distinctive types of housing along the Vienne, a church with different building phases, and activities related to hiking, wine and culture. When planning your stay, the approximate time needed for the walking trail and the fact that some visitor activities are seasonal or subject to change are particularly relevant.
Housing Along the Vienne
Saint-Germain-Sur-Vienne is located in the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park. Tuffeau stone houses stand on the slopes along the Vienne. There are also several houses in the village built into the rock. These forms offer different features: the houses on the slopes are noted for their tuffeau stone, while the other houses are built into the rock. Anyone interested in local building styles will find two distinct aspects here.
Church and Mill
The church of Saint-Germain-Sur-Vienne has been listed as a historic monument since 1908. Its single-nave structure, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, has no vault; elements of earlier foundations were also incorporated. Single-nave means that the main body of the church consists of one nave; without a vault means that it has no vaulted ceiling. The choir is Angevin Gothic, also called “Plantagenet,” and has numerous ribs as well as carved 13th-century bosses. The nave and choir thus display different architectural features and dates within the same church building.
Another architectural feature is the Moulin de Rassay. Built in 1845, this grain mill is of the Moulin-cavier type; its truncated-cone-shaped tower survives. Alongside the church’s architecture, the mill—with its clearly identified design and recorded year of construction—is part of the village’s history.
Walking Trail, Riverbanks and Nature
The Saint-Germain-Sur-Vienne circular walking trail is 13.9 kilometres long and takes about three hours. It starts and ends at the church. The approximate duration helps you estimate how much time to allow for the route; check the route information for updates before setting out. There is a car park for the trail opposite the church, on the other side of the road. As parking arrangements can change, check the situation on site.
Depending on the season, traditional boats, including Futeraux and Toues cabanées, are moored on the Vienne at Rassay. Grey herons, little egrets, common terns, grey wagtails and kingfishers can be spotted along the banks of the Vienne at Rassay. Bird sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Kayaking is offered as an activity for visitors in Saint-Germain-Sur-Vienne; check before travelling whether it is available on your dates.
