Saint-Étienne-De-Chigny offers several distinct points of interest for a trip focused on culture and landscapes: protected buildings, the landscape around the Besme and Loire, and paths and activities in the Parc des Grillets. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: historic architecture, nature, or a seasonal or reservation-only experience.

Churches, Manor House and Mill

The Church of Saint-Étienne was classified as a historic monument by decree on 21 July 1942. The church in the Vieux Bourg was rebuilt at Jean Binet’s request between 1542 and 1543. The Church of Saint-Étienne also houses a 16th-century stained-glass window depicting the Crucifixion. It shows portraits of Jean Binet and his wife.

The Manoir d’Andigny has been known since the 12th century and is partially protected as a historic monument. The protected features are the manor house’s façades and roofs, two monumental stone fireplaces, and the façade of its troglodytic chapel. The manor houses a collection of small historic ironwork dating from the 12th to the 18th century. It can be viewed during opening hours, so plan your visit accordingly.

On the western plateau of the commune stands the Moulin du « Pot au Beurre », dating from 1789. Above its entrance is a depiction of a house topped by a cross and showing a monstrance. This design could suggest that the mill ground wheat for making communion wafers. This interpretation is only a possibility. At the Pont de Bresme, restored houses partly built into the rock are home to several artists.

Loire Landscapes and Paths

The listed Vallée de la Bresme area includes Saint-Étienne-De-Chigny and covers 1,996 hectares. At Île Buda, the Besme flows into the Loire; the island has flora and fauna typical of the Loire. These landscape features add a distinct connection with nature to the historic buildings.

The Parc des Grillets offers shaded walking paths across 25 hectares, as well as opportunities for orienteering, Nordic walking, archery and a fitness trail. In addition to walking, there are other activities to choose from. As facilities may change, check the latest information before planning a specific activity.

The Théâtre de verdure also has flora and fauna typical of the Loire. It was created on the site of a former clay quarry and offers a programme of performances during the season. If you would like to combine your stay with a performance, check the event dates in advance; the seasonal programme may change.

Planning Excursions and Culinary Experiences

Since 2022, the Les Bateliers de Saint-Étienne-de-Chigny association, in partnership with the Tours-Val de Loire Tourist Office, has offered more regular educational excursions on the Loire. Dates may vary. Unlike walking paths and seasonal performances, a river excursion offers a separate way to shape your stay.

For wine enthusiasts, the Château de Beauvois offers an oenology introduction by reservation only. It includes a visit to the troglodytic cellar, a tasting of three wines—two local selections and one wine from the owner—and a platter of charcuterie and cheese. Check the dates and availability of this offer in advance.

Opening hours, changeable event dates and reservations each call for different kinds of planning.
