For a trip to Epeigné-Les-Bois, you can choose from three trails with different lengths and landscapes: 9 km on the Sentier de Chossay, 10 km on the Sentier de Bellevue and 12 km on the Sentier de Monpoupon. There are also the Église Saint-Aignan and the Plan d'eau d'Épeigné-les-Bois. This gives you a choice when planning between routes with valley and forest panoramas, vineyards and a château as a destination, a historic building, and a place for walks or fishing.
Three Hiking Trails with Different Profiles
The Sentier de Chossay is 9 km long and runs above the Chézelle Valley. The route offers views of the Cher Valley and the Forest of Amboise. Its highlights are both its elevated position above the Chézelle Valley and views towards the Cher Valley and forest.
At 10 km, the Sentier de Bellevue is one kilometre longer. Its sequence of landscapes sets it apart from Chossay: the trail first passes through forests, then reaches the Bellevue plain. The route offers a wide panorama over the Cher Valley. When comparing the routes, you can therefore consider not only their lengths but also the sequence of landscapes: Bellevue leads from the forest to the plain, while Chossay runs above the Chézelle Valley and offers views of the Forest of Amboise.
At 12 km, the Sentier de Monpoupon is the longest of the three trails. It passes through vineyards and, after leaving the forests, reaches the Château de Montpoupon in idyllic surroundings. In addition to the valley and forest views on the other two routes, this trail features vineyards and a named château as distinctive landmarks. The trails differ by three kilometres in total from shortest to longest; the landscapes described for each also play a part in choosing a route.
Église Saint-Aignan: Building History and Vaulting
The Église Saint-Aignan dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and has been listed as a historic monument since 21 April 1948. A distinctive architectural feature is found in the nave: it dates from the 13th century and has comparatively rare sexpartite vaults. “Sexpartite” describes the vaults’ arrangement and draws attention to a specific detail of the church’s construction. The Église Saint-Aignan can thus be placed in its historical context; the design of its nave also offers a particular point of interest for those interested in cultural history.
Plan d'eau: Walks, Fishing and Cycling
The Plan d'eau d'Épeigné-les-Bois welcomes anglers and walkers. Facilities include a picnic area, a bicycle station, play equipment and toilets. Unlike the three trails, the focus here is on the activities and facilities available in one place. If these amenities are important to your plans, check their current status before visiting; individual facilities may change over time.
The Plan d'eau also has the Accueil Vélo and La Loire à Vélo labels. As tourism labels are updated regularly, it is advisable to check their current status if you are interested. This offers another distinction for planning your trip: you can choose routes based on their length and landscape, or focus on walks, fishing and the facilities at the Plan d'eau.
