Montlouis-sur-Loire brings together river landscapes and vineyards with art, architectural history and themes related to the Loire. For your planning, you can choose between hikes of varying lengths, changing exhibitions, historic architectural features and wine-tasting experiences. This lets you tailor your stay to your preferred focus: exploring the landscape on foot, a cultural visit, or a combination of the two. You can decide which activities to combine based on your interests and how much time you would like to spend on each outing.

Loire Landscapes and Vineyards

Montlouis-sur-Loire opens onto the valleys of the Loire and the Cher. The Loire Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vineyards and hamlets built of white stone shape the rural landscape. This puts river valleys and wine country in view as distinct aspects of the area. Another nature option is Île de Bondésir: it covers around 30 hectares and has a discovery trail. Its size and trail give this destination its own appeal alongside the hiking routes.

Hikes by Distance

The easy circular hike “Entre vignes et bois” is 2.30 kilometres long. It was designed to be accessible to people with reduced mobility, care-home residents and families. Check trail conditions before setting out. At 17 kilometres, the “Entre Loire et vignes” route is the longer option. It follows the river and passes through the vineyards of the AOC Montlouis-sur-Loire, ending at Chemin de Bellevue with a panoramic view of the Loire.

The main difference between the two routes is their length: the shorter loop offers a compact hiking option, while the 17-kilometre route takes up considerably more of your day. It also passes through river and wine landscapes before reaching the Loire panorama. You can choose between a shorter loop and a longer hike without treating the two options as a single route.

Art, Architecture and Loire Heritage

Le Carroi des Arts is a municipal exhibition gallery, where the art collections on display change every three weeks. If you are planning a gallery visit, the exhibition programme is therefore an important guide when choosing your travel dates. Église Saint-Laurent preserves an early 12th-century vaulted apse in the shape of a half-dome, as well as the base of its bell tower. The church offers a different cultural perspective from the changing exhibitions, with its historic architectural features taking centre stage.

Maison de la Loire 37 is a centre for learning about and interpreting the heritage of the Loire. It offers discovery outings along the Loire throughout the year for groups and the general public. The programme and availability may vary; check current arrangements if you would like to include an outing in your plans. These outings complement the centre’s interpretation of Loire heritage with an experience on the Loire itself.

Wine, Gardens and Seasonal Events

Maison Laudacius offers a guided tour of its underground cave cellars, followed by a wine tasting. Founded in 1961, the winery brings together 15 winegrowers from the Montlouis-sur-Loire appellation and is recognised as a “Cave d’Excellence.” If you are planning a tour and tasting, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

The park and gardens of Château de la Bourdaisière cover 55 hectares and include, among other features, an art trail through the forest. The gardens are open to the public at seasonal times: from 7 April to 31 May and from 1 October to 2 November, opening hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; from 1 June to 30 September, they are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to check before your visit. The Château also hosts the Tomato and Flavours Festival every year. Dates and programme vary annually; check the details for your travel dates.

Planning Your Stay

The Montlouis-sur-Loire tourist office is a central point of contact. Its advisers can help you find accommodation and places to eat, as well as leisure and cultural activities. Contact details and opening hours may change; check them before making an enquiry.
