In Le Louroux, you can plan your stay around walking, the ponds and wetlands, or local history. The routes differ in length and layout; cultural themes range from the priory to the history of the region and its products. For planning, specific information about trails and sights is therefore more useful than trying to fit every discovery into a single set route.

Walking Trails by the Étang du Louroux

The 5.2 km “Label Balade” is a loop around the Étang du Louroux. The “Les étangs du Prieuré” route also starts and ends at the Étang; it is 15.8 km long and rated easy. It also has a 5.1 km variant. The two shorter distances are close in length but describe different routes: a loop around the pond and a variant of the longer route. When choosing, pay attention to the route description as well as the distance if the trail layout matters to you.

The longest route listed is the 18.6 km “Les ailes du Louroux” walking trail. This gives you routes of different lengths to choose from, ranging from the 5.1 km variant to this longer trail. Follow the yellow trail markers on “Les étangs du Prieuré”. Check the trail conditions and markers before setting out; both can change.

Ponds, Wetlands and Birdwatching

The Étang du Louroux area consists of two ponds: the 55 ha Étang des Roseaux and the adjoining 5 ha Étang de Beaulieu. These two named bodies of water, which differ considerably in size, are at the heart of the landscape. The wetland around the Étang includes woodland to the northwest and meadows to the south. Between them is a diverse mosaic of natural habitats, home to numerous species and nesting birds.

An ornithological observatory at the Étang du Louroux lets visitors observe and identify the birds found there.

The approximately 1.35 km interpretive trail at the Étang du Louroux includes an observatory that is accessible to people with hearing, intellectual, mobility and visual disabilities. If accessibility is important to your plans, check the facilities on site before your trip. The approximate trail length and the observatory’s specifically stated accessibility offer two different points of reference.

The Priory, Village History and Regional Products

The interpretive program in Le Louroux features 14 panels introducing visitors to the priory, the village and the Étang du Louroux. These themes offer several ways to explore local history: the historic complex, the village itself and the pond landscape.

The priory of Le Louroux, also known as Château du Louroux, was founded in the 11th century by Marmoutier Abbey. The priory complex includes the prior’s residence, two barns, a dovecote and the Church of Saint-Sulpice, dedicated to Saint Sulpicius. Its buildings range from a residence and agricultural structures to a church; visitors interested in the priory will find more than just one type of building.

The Maison de Pays offers another perspective. It tells the story of Le Louroux and its region. You can also discover a wide range of regional products there.
