A hike or a cycling route? In Marray, you can make your choice based on specific route details; at the same time, the bocage landscape and distinctive architectural landmarks shape the area. If you are planning a stay, you can choose your priorities among exercise, scenery and culture without having to fit everything into a fixed itinerary.

Landscape and views

Haut Montas is 184 metres high and offers panoramic views as far as the Loire Valley. Marray’s landscape is also strongly shaped by its bocage features. Together, these offer both wide-ranging views and a characteristic landscape.

Hiking and cycling compared

The “Les Versants de la Dême” hiking trail is 16.5 km long, offers two variants, takes around four hours, is rated moderate in difficulty and marked in red. It passes through woods, forests and fields on both sides of the valley. Check local trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

The “Autour de la vallée de la Dême – Boucle à vélo n°32” cycling route starts in Marray, is 19.3 km long, is rated easy and has a stated duration of 1 hour 45 minutes. It runs along the Dême, whose ecological quality makes it possible for brown trout to live there. The route also offers panoramic views of the Touraine countryside. At 19.3 km, it is longer than the 16.5 km hiking trail, but its stated duration is shorter than the hike’s roughly four hours. The time estimates refer to different activities.

Architectural history and traces of technology

The Church of Saint-Pierre in Marray is the only church in Touraine made of Roussard sandstone, a stone typical of northern Touraine. At Château de la Roche d’Alès, the stylistic range spans the 16th to the 19th century. A dormer window with a central mullion and a small decorative figure on its gable is a specific architectural detail. The former railway station retains a water tank that was used to refill locomotive water tanks. Regional building material, a broad span of architectural styles and the former technical function of railway infrastructure thus stand alongside one another as distinct traces of culture.

Market and picnic break

The monthly producers’ market takes place year-round at Place de la Poste, on Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m. Confirm the market times before your visit. There is a picnic area at Étang communal. As visitor facilities can change, check in advance whether it is currently usable. These are two different reasons to visit: a market visit at the stated times and a separate opportunity to take a break.
