Chisseaux opens up the Cher through historic structures and different ways to get out on the water. On an island stands a fortified watermill; there are also narrated boat trips, boats for independent hire and canoe tours. Two questions can help you decide: Would you like to view a structure from the riverbank or experience the river by boat? And does a stated journey time or a specific distance better suit your plans?

Mill, Island and Sluice Weir

The Moulin Fort de Chisseaux stands on an island in the Cher and is a fortified watermill dating from the 16th century. The building is privately owned. It can be viewed from the right bank of the Cher, a few hundred metres before the Chisseaux weir with its lock. This makes it possible to take in the island setting and historic architecture from the riverbank, while making clear that the building is private. The weir and lock are one of 16 such structures on the canalised Cher. The mill and weir offer different cultural and historical points of reference on the river: a fortified watermill and a lock system that is part of a larger series. Anyone interested in architectural history will find not only an individual building, but also a point of connection to the canalised Cher.

Narrated Trip or Boat Hire

La Bélandre offers a 50-minute narrated trip on the Cher from its base in Chisseaux. It passes beneath the arches of the Château de Chenonceau, using the traditional boats Gabare or Ambacia. The stated duration makes it easy to plan the trip as a block of time, and the passage beneath the arches describes its specific route. La Bélandre also rents electric boats that can be used without a licence, as well as picnic boats for independent use. This gives you a choice of different ways to go boating in addition to the narrated tour. The operator is seasonal and services may change; check in advance whether your preferred trip or rental is available on your visit date.

Canoeing on the Cher

BASE Aventure Canoë offers canoe tours on the Cher, including family-friendly trips for ages six and up. The Chisseaux–Chenonceaux–Chisseaux route is 6 km long. The route name indicates a round trip between the two place names; the kilometre figure gives a specific distance. If the age guidance is relevant to your group, bear in mind that family-friendly trips are offered for ages six and up. Operator information may change; check in advance whether your preferred canoe option is available.

Putting Time and Distance in Context

The 50 minutes for the narrated trip and the 6 km for the canoe route are different planning measures: one states the duration of an activity, while the other gives the length of a route. They are therefore not directly comparable as longer or shorter outings. If you are looking for a clearly stated block of time, the narrated trip is easier to plan; for the canoe tour, the distance is the main consideration. The options also differ in how you take part: join a narrated trip, use an electric or picnic boat independently, or choose the stated canoe route.
