In Langeais, cultural highlights range from a 15th-century castle to a Palaeolithic archaeological site. Churches from different periods add to the picture, while places for walks can be found in the castle park and at Étang des Essards. When planning your visit, it is worth noting the different access conditions for the churches as well as the sights themselves.

Château de Langeais: Fortified Architecture and Life at the Castle

Château de Langeais is characterised by its working drawbridge gate, rampart walk and imposing towers. These features give the castle’s 15th-century fortified architecture a tangible form. Visitors interested in historic buildings can explore the different elements of the complex, rather than viewing the castle solely through the lens of its period.

Fifteen furnished rooms offer another perspective on the building. Their scenographic displays depict the life of a noble family in the late Middle Ages, as well as the wedding of Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany. There is also a collection of important works from this period. The architecture, furnished rooms and art each provide a different perspective, taking visitors from the construction of the castle to the ways of life on display and the art of the late Middle Ages.

Walks and Outdoor Activities

The park at Château de Langeais offers a different experience. It has several play areas, a treehouse in a mighty cedar and a walking trail leading to a viewpoint over the Loire. The play areas and treehouse complement the trail to the viewpoint, giving visitors different ways to spend time outdoors.

At Étang des Essards, visitors can go for walks, use the picnic areas and fish. These options cater to different interests: you can take a walk, enjoy a picnic area or go fishing. For those who do not want to focus their visit solely on castles and churches, they also offer reasons to spend time outdoors.

Churches and Visitor Access

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Langeais has a 10th-century crypt that can be visited. Check access before your visit. The Église Saint-Laurent is a well-preserved Romanesque church; it is open to the public only during the Journées du Patrimoine. Notre-Dame des Essards is also open to visitors during the Journées du Patrimoine. Check the dates before your trip if you would like to include these churches in your plans.

Notre-Dame des Essards is a Romanesque church classified as a Monument historique. It has one of the rare 13th-century stained-glass windows in rural Touraine. The single-nave building dates from 1022. Here, architectural history and a remarkable feature of its furnishings stand side by side; visits are limited to the Journées du Patrimoine.

A Prehistoric Site and a Cultural Route

Langeais is also home to the Palaeolithic archaeological site Gisement paléolithique de la Roche-Cotard, which has been classified as a Monument historique since 7 May 2021. The protected area encompasses the decorated Grotte d’Achon and its underground network in their entirety, as well as all the caves and karst networks. It also includes the cliff face and its slope, including the ground and subsoil. The site extends the historical perspective beyond the castle and churches, reaching back into prehistory.

Langeais is also a stop on the cultural route of the Legend of the Été de la Saint Martin, between Candes-Saint-Martin and Tours. The 114-kilometre route starts in Chinon and ends in Tours. In Langeais, individual attractions sit alongside a cultural connection that reaches beyond the town.
