Descartes brings together the history of philosophy, historic buildings, walking trails and a public garden. The Musée Descartes is housed in René Descartes’ birthplace, which dates in part to the 16th century. There are also churches with different historical connections and trails that each offer their own insights into the town. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the museum and architectural history or also make time to spend outdoors.

Philosophy and Cultural History

The Musée Descartes presents the philosopher’s life and work while also providing a historical and cultural overview of the Renaissance and the 17th century. The museum has carried the French designation “Musée de France” since September 17, 2003; the designation is governed by French heritage protection law. The birthplace thus brings together a direct connection to René Descartes and a broader perspective on the eras.

The Espace Muséal brings together three museums in three purpose-built buildings. Each is dedicated to an exceptional individual born in the municipality. The Espace Muséal also includes the Micro-Folie: a digital museum that uses tablets to present thousands of artworks from national and international collections. This means the focus extends beyond the subjects of any one museum to encompass a variety of collections and artworks.

Churches and Traces of the Town’s History

The former church of Notre-Dame de la Haye is classified as a historic monument. Its history dates back to 1104, when it was founded as the chapel of La Haye Castle. Remains of Romanesque wall paintings have been preserved inside the building. Its historic status, early origins and paintings offer several distinct ways to appreciate this structure.

Saint-Georges Church is the oldest church in Descartes and was built in the 12th century. The Grenier à Sel offers a different connection to the town’s history: the building was constructed in the 17th century on the former parade ground. The paper mill is also part of Descartes’ historical development. Founded in August 1857, it produced various types of paper, including printing paper, particularly thin papers and paper for administrative use.

Walking Trails and Outdoor Routes

La Cartésienne is a walking route where you can discover Descartes. Information panels and reading tables explain the sights along the way. The Sentier de bourg is also a walking route for exploring the heritage, but it is unguided and has information panels. You can therefore choose between the specific information and reading tables along La Cartésienne and the explicitly unguided nature of the Sentier de bourg.

The route lengths also offer a point of comparison: the circuit in Bois de la Roche Bellin is 8 kilometers long. At 42 kilometers, the Voie Verte du Sud Touraine is considerably longer and is used for cycling, hiking and mountain biking. It begins in Descartes and ends in Tournon-Saint-Pierre. This gives you a choice between a shorter circuit and a longer route with specifically listed activities.

Garden, Water and Market

The public Jardin René Boylesve covers about 15,000 square meters and is located within the former enclosure of a castle. Its rare or exotic trees include the sequoia, ginkgo and persimmon; they were planted in the 19th century. The garden also has a small animal park.

The Descartes aquatics area has six pools, including a 25-meter pool, as well as a current channel, a slide and an outdoor hot tub. Since opening times and facilities may change, check the latest information before planning a visit. The Club canoë-kayak de Descartes rents out canoes for two hours, half a day or a full day and arranges transport to the starting point. Availability may be seasonal; check what is available for your dates.

A weekly market is held every Sunday morning on the site of the former fairground. Since schedules may change, it is advisable to check the date for your visit. The Descartes Tourist Information Office is located in a former railway station building.
