At the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers, Candes-Saint-Martin brings together river landscapes, architectural history and contemporary art. The village lies in an area classified as a protected landscape site by decree on 17 September 2021; the area also includes Candes-Saint-Martin. An almost continuous line of buildings runs along the limestone slope, together with neighbouring Montsoreau—from the Loire and its harbours up to the cultivated plateau.

River, slope and views

This sequence shapes the character of the landscape: the riverbanks and harbours lie at the foot of the slope, above which are the built-up hillside and the agricultural plateau. A former harbour for fishing and inland navigation stood at the confluence of the Vienne and the Loire. It is part of the village’s history, while the view of the confluence brings the river landscape into focus.

The freely accessible Le Panorama picnic area sits at the top of the tuffeau slope and offers expansive views of the confluence of the Vienne and Loire. Facilities may vary seasonally. Those interested in the landscape will find a specific viewpoint here, while the historic buildings in the village offer a different perspective on Candes-Saint-Martin.

Cycling loop, Loire history and the water

The signposted Boucle vélo n°43 “Between Anjou and Touraine” cycling loop passes through Candes-Saint-Martin. It is 17 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour and 30 minutes. Signage and conditions may change, so check the latest route information before setting out.

The “When there were sailors on the Loire” discovery trail runs from Montsoreau to Candes-Saint-Martin and introduces the history of the Loire’s barge workers. The accompanying discovery booklet is available for €1 at the Maison du Parc and can be downloaded free of charge from the Regional Park’s website. As distribution arrangements may change, it is worth checking the Park’s latest information beforehand.

The Regional Park’s canoeing information also lists a route to Candes-Saint-Martin: La Chapelle-sur-Loire–Candes-Saint-Martin, titled “The Loire navy”. Actual access to the river depends on conditions and applicable regulations. The “bird weather” report is also available from Castors candais; check whether it will be available during your trip.

Architectural history in the village

The Collégiale Saint-Martin was built in the 12th and 13th centuries on the site where Saint Martin died in 397. The Ancien château des Archevêques de Tours was a former fortified summer residence of the archbishops of Tours. Construction began in 1485; completion dates are 1520 and 1527.

Other buildings reveal different periods and styles: the Ancienne maison canoniale has 12th-century façades with round-arched arcades and is partly protected as a historic monument. The Moulin-cavier du Puits Saint-Michel, by contrast, is protected in its entirety; the mill was listed as a historic monument on 2 February 1993. Together with the former harbour, these places tell the story of the area’s architectural and economic history along the river, although the individual sights do not all play the same role.

Contemporary art above the Loire

The Street Art Parc offers a different perspective: the five-hectare park sits above the Loire among old trees and features 60 monumental works of art. The number of works and the park’s operations may continue to evolve. The park brings together contemporary art, nature, cultural heritage and urban planning; it is also an artistic stop along the La Loire à Vélo route. Check the latest access information before planning a visit.

For trip planning, the options vary depending on your interests: the cycling loop provides an approximate time frame of around an hour and a half, while canoe access and arrangements depend on river conditions and regulations, and the discovery trail focuses on the history of Loire navigation. If you choose accommodation based on the experiences you have planned, river landscapes, architectural history or contemporary art may help you decide whether Candes-Saint-Martin is right for your trip.
