Travelers choosing Crotelles as a destination will find two distinct areas of interest: prehistoric culture and ecclesiastical architecture, as well as a landscape shaped by waterways and wetlands. The “Gros Perron” menhir and Église Notre-Dame provide cultural highlights; the Madelon and Étang Hidou offer different perspectives on nature. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: you can focus on culture, nature, or a combination of both.

Menhir and Église Notre-Dame

On a hill north of the town center, the Neolithic “Gros Perron” menhir can be seen from a footpath. It is about 1.70 meters high and made of puddingstone. Its height, material, and location give this individual monument a tangible physical and geographical context. For travelers interested in prehistory, the menhir is a clearly defined point of reference: it connects a named period with a visible place in the landscape.

Église Notre-Dame offers a different perspective on cultural history. Its nave dates from the 11th century; the church has been restored several times over the years. Another distinctive feature is the choir roof, which is shaped like a “donkey’s bonnet.” Two distinct cultural subjects can thus be distinguished: a Neolithic menhir and a church with a medieval nave, repeated restorations, and a distinctive roof shape. This comparison helps distinguish the menhir’s chronological period from the church’s architectural history.

The Madelon and Étang Hidou

In the surrounding landscape, numerous springs, wells, and fountains feed the Madelon. Biological observations from 2020 recorded brown trout, bullhead, stone loach, and minnow there; trout of all ages were found in the area of the town center. The ecological condition of the Madelon in the Crotelles area was also assessed as good, based on observations and surveys from 2020. The watercourse can therefore be considered both in terms of its place in the landscape and its biological characteristics as recorded at that time.

Another natural feature is the recolonization of Étang Hidou: birds, amphibians, and insects, as well as wetland flora, have gradually returned to the area. A municipal description from 2021 noted that the former Étang Hidou had already been redesigned as a wetland almost ten years earlier. Regular maintenance was needed to preserve the diversity of flora and fauna. In contrast to the Madelon, the focus here is on the return of wetland life and its upkeep, rather than on a list of individual aquatic species.

Plan activities and accommodation

Crotelles also has tourist cycling routes and hiking trails. They complement the cultural and natural features with two ways to get around that you can consider when planning your stay. This offers several possible areas of focus: prehistoric culture, church architecture, aquatic ecology, wetland nature, or active exploration. If you are looking for a hotel in Crotelles, you can first consider which of these aspects of the town you would most like to shape your stay.
