Monthodon between village centers and circular trails

Monthodon has two separate village centers. Each has its own cultural heritage and an independent walking loop, with a family-friendly option. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose according to your main interest: Is your focus cultural heritage, a walking loop, or a combination of the two? The separate village centers give this choice a concrete framework: instead of one general village circuit, there are two distinct options to choose from.

Hiking: Route Length and Landscape

The two named trails differ considerably in length. Le Sentier de la Glaise is 7.7 kilometers long, while Monthodon à travers champs is 15 kilometers—making the longer route almost twice as long. If you are planning a shorter hike for the day, Le Sentier de la Glaise is the shorter of the two options; for a longer distance, consider Monthodon à travers champs. GPX tracks were available to download for both routes. Before setting out, check whether the relevant download is currently available. The longer loop is 7.3 kilometers longer than the shorter one; this specific difference makes it easier to choose a route length that fits your plans.

The landscape also offers clues to help you choose. The walking loops pass through the landscapes of the Gâtine and let you discover the Glaise Valley. The Rondy Valley has lush and varied flora. Monthodon’s natural appeal is therefore not described by distance alone: the Gâtine and Glaise Valley are landscape features of the hikes, while the flora of the Rondy Valley offers another aspect of nature. If landscape matters more to you than a particular route length when choosing a destination, these features are useful points of reference.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Étienne was built in the 12th century. The Protestant temple in Le Sentier dates from 1896. The span between the two buildings offers a tangible comparison between a medieval structure and a temple from the late 19th century. Monthodon’s cultural landmarks thus represent different historical periods.

Another point of interest is the Arboretum de La Petite Loiterie in Le Sentier, within the municipality of Monthodon. Its events cater to a very broad audience, including casual gardeners, experienced amateur gardeners, students and professionals. The program therefore appeals to people with varying connections to gardening, from occasional interest to study or professional work. Event topics and dates vary by season. If you would like to include an event in your travel plans, check the dates for your stay.
