In La Puisaye, cultural heritage and outdoor activities offer distinct ways to explore the area. The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the Lavoir offer a glimpse of architectural history and past uses; the Étang de Rouge combines a historical origin with fishing, while two signposted walking routes round out the outdoor options. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on the church and Lavoir, walking, or the pond.

Church and local history

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste stands near the site of a former castle, now in ruins. On the gable above the porch is a polychrome—that is, multicoloured—stone sculpture of John the Baptist with a lamb. It was installed in the 18th century and restored in the 20th century. Its subject, material and precise location on the building give the church several specific details; the two dates distinguish its installation from its later restoration. The church also preserves two notable old tomb slabs, classified as historic monuments in 1908. This highlights both the sculptural features and the tomb slabs’ significance to local history.

The Lavoir de La Puisaye adds a building connected with historical everyday life to these landmarks. It was built between 1912 and 1922 and could accommodate twelve washerwomen. This capacity brings its former communal use to life and places an everyday activity alongside the church’s religious features. Together, the church and the Lavoir offer two distinct ways to explore the town’s history: one through sculpture and tomb slabs, the other through a washhouse and its former use.

Étang de Rouge and walking

The Étang de Rouge is a seven-hectare pond created by monks around the 13th century. The area gives a sense of its size, while the approximate date adds a historical perspective. The pond is also a destination for carp anglers. If you plan to fish, check current access and operating conditions in advance.

La Haute Giboudiere and Bois des Scouts are signposted walking routes in La Puisaye. Route details may change, so check them before setting out. If walking is a deciding factor for your trip, include up-to-date route information in your choices.

Choosing the focus of your stay

The differences are clear when choosing what to do based on your interests: the church and Lavoir represent architectural and usage history, the Étang is a historically created body of water associated with fishing, and the two routes offer signposted walks. When choosing where to stay, consider which of these perspectives matters most to you. Whether you focus on cultural history, walking or the pond, you can weigh the different options according to your own travel plans.
