In Sainville, the Musée Farcot and Église Saint-Pierre provide distinct historical reference points for the town’s heritage. The museum has held the French designation “Musée de France” since 17 September 2003; the church is a religious building dating from the 12th century and a distinctive part of the heritage of the Eure-et-Loir département. These details refer to different things: the date marks the museum’s designation, while the century indicates the age of the church. This makes it easy to distinguish the town’s cultural themes.

Church and bell: two historical reference points

The largest bell at Église Saint-Pierre adds another distinct historical reference point. It dates from 1549 and is listed as a historic monument. The church building and the bell therefore have different dates: the 12th century refers to the church, while 1549 refers to the bell. The church is intended to be opened to visitors to the area, particularly those exploring the religious heritage of Beauce and Chartres. Its planned opening is therefore a separate aspect to consider when planning a visit.

The history of the Couvent Marie Poussepin

The Couvent Marie Poussepin offers a different cultural focus. It is considered the birthplace of the congregation founded by Marie Poussepin, the Dominican Sisters of Charity of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the chapel, the choir is adorned with a monumental fresco by Pierre Petit, a painter from Tours. The community’s history and the artwork thus offer two distinct ways to explore the site: the work of its founder and the decoration of the chapel choir.

On 21 November, the Presentation of Mary is celebrated at the convent, and the sisters symbolically renew their vows. As the annual religious programme may change, it is worth checking in advance if this celebration is important to your travel plans.

Bois de Sainville as a nature attraction

Nearby lies Bois de Sainville, a nine-hectare ZNIEFF Type I site. It is a calcareous sessile oak and hornbeam woodland and is home to populations of Asarum europaeum and Doronicum plantagineum; both plant species are protected at regional level. Alongside the buildings and religious history, this offers a distinctly different theme: the woodland type, its limited area and the named plants define its natural character. If heritage is your main interest, the museum, church and convent offer different points of interest. If you are more drawn to nature, the nearby woodland is worth exploring.

Check visiting hours

The Musée Farcot is located at 2 place Farcot, 28700 Sainville. Regular visits are possible on the second Sunday of each month from 14:00 to 17:00; during school holidays, you can book an appointment. As visiting arrangements may change, we recommend confirming the opening times in advance.

The Bibliothèque de Sainville also follows the school calendar: during term time, it is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 16:30 to 18:30. During school holidays, it is open only on Fridays, also from 16:30 to 18:30. This distinction is important for your plans if you would like to include a library visit.
