Cultural history from different perspectives
Dampierre-sur-Avre can be viewed from three different cultural and historical perspectives: the Château du Puits de la Motte represents its medieval defensive role, the mills tell the story of local technology, and the rood beam in the Église Saint-Pierre is an example of religious figurative art. The Étang du Ménillet nearby adds a natural-history dimension.
During the Hundred Years’ War, the Château du Puits de la Motte in Le Plessis was a defensive structure and observation post for the Kingdom of France. The Anglo-Norman armies stationed at Godeneval faced it from the opposite side. The combination of defence and observation shows the military role the structure played at that time.
Another point of interest is the rood beam in the Église Saint-Pierre. The complete polychrome beam separates the nave from the choir; polychrome means multicoloured. It depicts Christ on the Cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John, with the Pietà below. The work thus combines an architectural function with a figurative religious depiction. A Pietà shows Mary with the body of Jesus; the term refers to a distinct subject depicted beneath the Crucifixion scene. Visitors can therefore read the two religious motifs on the beam as separate scenes, rather than confusing the Pietà with the Crucifixion.
Three mills were established in Dampierre-sur-Avre: Islou, la Bouverie and Le Ménillet. The second grain mill belonged to the private estate of Le Ménillet. It was fitted out “à l’anglaise”: a single waterwheel shaft could drive several pairs of millstones; the mill also had a horizontal waterwheel. The mill is therefore more than just a name in the village’s history: it illustrates how the energy source and power transmission can be understood as two parts of a system.
