Messanges brings together the landscape of the wooded Plateau de Myon, natural sites and Moulin Chevalier. When choosing a holiday rental, you can decide what to focus on during your stay: the landscape and biodiversity, traces of local heritage, or milling and its technology. This lets you give priority to the features of the area that matter most to you.

Landscape and Nature in Messanges

Messanges lies on the foothills of the wooded Plateau de Myon, whose landscape is typical of the Val de Vergy. The Meuzin forms the eastern boundary of the commune. The plateau’s northern slopes are home to ravine forests, where Actée en épi grows, a plant considered rare in Burgundy. The plateau’s foothills, wooded slopes and eastern river boundary mark out different aspects of the landscape.

The Combe de Roche has a different character: a steep-sided hollow with wooded slopes. In spring, oxeye daisies, meadow clary, yellow rattle and knapweeds bloom there, attracting many insect species. The wooded hill of Mantuan on the edge of the village is considered an important biodiversity reservoir. The fire salamander can also be observed in Messanges. The Combe brings a distinct touch of spring; the plateau, ravine forests, Mantuan and the Meuzin add further landscape and natural features.

Milling and Technology at Moulin Chevalier

Moulin Chevalier is set up as an ecomuseum of milling. Across four floors and 950 m², it showcases traditional flour-making machinery. It also explains the Meuzin and the miller’s craft through the hydraulic system, including its feeder channel, spillway, sluice gate, waterwheel and turbine. Those interested in milling technology can explore both the machinery and the different components of the system.

Visits are available with or without a guide. Moulin Chevalier also offers events, a shop and exhibitions. Opening dates and booking requirements may vary. Before your visit, check the available tour options and, if you are planning to attend a particular event, its date.

Local History and Heritage

The Croix du Moulin is a calvary monument more than four metres high, engraved with religious and astronomical symbols. These carvings offer a different perspective from the technical interpretation at Moulin Chevalier. Messanges is also home to a former village washhouse and two walls for beehives.

Next to the mairie-école stands the tower of a round stone dovecote. It has about 400 square nesting openings. Together with the calvary and former washhouse, these architectural features illustrate different aspects of local heritage, from religious symbols to earlier ways of life in the village and farming practices.

Choosing Where to Stay

The RD 35 crosses Messanges from north to south, east of the village. Nature watching, local heritage and Moulin Chevalier offer different points of focus: first consider which matter most to you, then tailor your search for holiday rentals in Messanges accordingly.
