Arnay-le-Duc is a former medieval town with a rich and varied architectural heritage. It lies on the border between Auxois and Morvan. Several themes take center stage here: architectural history, a museum dedicated to food and dining culture, a weekly market, and a seasonal summer program. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering the day of the week and the time of year.

Architecture and Town History

The Tour de la Motte-Forte is a round, crenellated medieval structure and the last surviving part of the Motte-Forte castle. As of August 2026, the tower was not open to the public; check access arrangements before your visit. The Château des Princes de Condé was built in the 17th century and sold to the Prince of Condé in 1634. From 1865 to 1954, the château housed the Proutat file factory—another historic chapter in the building’s use.

Maison Bourgogne also offers a tangible glimpse into architectural history: the 15th-century building has a richly decorated Renaissance façade, a corner turret, and a stair tower. Since March 2012, it has housed the Pays Arnay-Liernais tourist office. You can get a free leaflet from the tourist office for a self-guided tour of Arnay-le-Duc.

A Museum of Food and Dining Culture

The Maison Régionale des Arts de la Table is housed in the former 17th-century Saint-Pierre hospices. It is considered the first museum devoted entirely to food in everyday life and at festive tables. Since 1981, its program has included exhibitions lasting seven months. Their themes include food, gastronomy, enjoyment, and dining culture.

This takes the focus beyond individual dishes: everyday food and the festive table highlight different aspects that the museum brings together under the shared theme of dining culture. For your visit, you can also choose between two types of tour: a guided tour of the heritage sites takes about two hours, while the free leaflet is intended for a self-guided tour.

Thursday: Weekly Market and Summer Evening

The Arnay-le-Duc market takes place on Thursday mornings. Stalls include, among other things, fruit and vegetables, charcuterie, grilled and roasted foods, baked goods, horticultural products, and a honey producer. The selection of vendors may vary by season. If you are planning your trip around market visits, you can set aside a specific weekday and morning time.

In July and August, the Les Nocturnes Estivales are also held every Thursday evening in the town center. The program includes stalls selling crafts and regional products, children’s activities, outdoor refreshments, and music. A Thursday can therefore offer two different time slots—the market in the morning and, during the summer months, the evening program. Check current event dates before your trip.

Summer at Étang Fouché

At the Étang Fouché leisure center near the town center of Arnay-le-Duc, supervised swimming is available in July and August. This seasonal restriction is an important factor when choosing your travel dates; check current operating conditions before planning your visit. Another type of outing is the Balade de l'étang de Fouché walk, listed as 2.6 kilometers long. The distance gives you a specific reference for route planning, while swimming is available only during the summer months.

When to Visit and How to Find a Hotel

When looking for hotels in Arnay-le-Duc, you can start by planning your stay around the experiences you want: the market takes place on Thursday mornings, and the Nocturnes Estivales are held on Thursday evenings in July and August. If you would like to include both, check current market and event dates before booking. For a stay focused on architectural history, the historic buildings, museum, and different tour options are the main attractions.
