Île D'houat combines a heath-covered plateau, several shallow valleys and a small working harbour. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, plan how you will get around: motorised vehicles are prohibited on Houat, so the island is explored on foot or by bicycle. There is also an extensive dune system, coastal views and historical remains.

Plateau, dunes and coastal views

The village lies above a small working harbour. The landscape is shaped by a heath-covered plateau cut through by several shallow valleys. At Treac'h er Goured, a dune belt stretches for more than two kilometres along the east coast. The dune system includes embryonic, white, grey and fossil dunes.

A coastal path circles Houat and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic, the cliffs and the beaches. This brings together different coastal perspectives: a clearly defined dune system on the eastern side and a path with views of several coastal features. The south coast is considered wild and unspoilt, with cliffs and coves shaping the coastline.

Nature among plants and seabirds

Several hundred plant species are found on Houat, representing almost a third of the flora of the Morbihan department. Manx shearwaters and European storm petrels breed in the Houat archipelago. The natural environment therefore extends from the island’s plant life to the archipelago’s breeding grounds.

Island history and the Eclosarium

Houat’s history includes traces of Neolithic settlement as well as megalithic and Gallo-Roman remains. The Eclosarium is a museum about microscopic life in the sea and the history of Houat. Its island garden represents the island’s botanical diversity, and the boutique offers local and island-made crafts. Archaeological remains are thus presented alongside subjects from marine science, botany and crafts.

On foot, by bike and on the water

Cycling is possible on Houat, and bicycles can be hired on the island. Bike-hire availability may vary by season. Club Nautique du Rohu offers catamaran and windsurfing lessons for beginners and experienced participants. The club also hires out stand-up paddleboards, sea kayaks, catamarans and windsurfing boards. Its activities also include guided kayak trips around Houat and sunset outings. Activity availability may vary by season.

Getting around and practical planning

The island is explored on foot or by bicycle; motorised vehicles are prohibited. GlazGo Mobilité can transport people and luggage from the harbour to the village or reception area. Reservations are required on Sundays. As service arrangements may change, check them before your trip if you plan to use the service. There is no ATM on Houat. Check this practical information locally before your trip, as details may change.
