In Lohuec, a walk can be combined with a look at the Aulne: the Circuit des moulins, designated as an easy walk, takes 1 hour and 45 minutes and leads to the river’s source in the hamlet of Pen Aon. The Aulne rises in the territory of the municipality of Lohuec in the Monts d’Arrée. From there, it flows through Finistère and empties into the Rade de Brest after about 144 kilometres. The route thus connects a specific place in Lohuec with a river whose course extends far beyond the municipality.

Walking Trails and Geological Features

The Circuit des moulins offers a set duration for a walk. For a different kind of discovery, the Carrière du Milin ar Stang offers a geological point of interest: it exposes basic volcanic lava flows with a clearly developed pillow-lava structure. The site is considered the only accessible place in inland Brittany where the pillow structure of a Palaeozoic volcanic outflow in an aquatic environment can be seen.

Prior permission is required to access the quarry. Check the current procedure before setting out. From Lohuec, travel towards Morlaix; after 700 metres, turn towards the Ster valley. The signposted quarry is about 500 metres further on. This information will help you find your way, but does not replace the required prior permission.

Another option is the treasure hunt Jeu de piste à Lohuec, Calanhel et Plourac’h: Partie de cache-cache dans le vallon. It covers 22 kilometres through Lohuec, Calanhel and Plourac’h and is recommended for travelling by car. Unlike the Circuit des moulins, it is not a designated walk, but an activity spanning several municipalities, to enjoy while travelling. As operational details may change, check the latest information before planning your trip.

Heritage from Different Eras

The architecture of Saint-Judoce Church can also be explored through clearly dated features. The large arches in the nave date from the second half of the 14th century, and the portal from the second half of the 15th century. The west façade was built in the first half of the 16th century; the bell tower dates from the 18th century. The church has been partially protected as a historic monument since 17 December 1926. The sequence of dates shows that the building does not originate from a single construction phase.

In Parc-ar-Pouldu is the Allée couverte de Kernescop, a Neolithic passage grave. It was classified as a historic monument in 1964. It is also interpreted archaeologically as a row of dolmens that served as a communal burial site during the Neolithic. Both aspects inform how the site is understood: the surviving structure and its possible prehistoric function.

The Moulin Quelen tells another chapter of history. It existed before the French Revolution; the dates 1610 and 1672 are engraved in the stones of its façade. The mill also includes a bread oven and a small museum with a reconstructed miller’s room. The engraved dates and the mill rooms on display offer two different ways to explore the history of the place: traces on the building and a depiction of life in a mill.

The Fontaine de dévotion in Lohuec adds to the picture: the stone devotional fountain bears sculptural decorations depicting a saint. Along with the buildings and the mill, it represents another form of local heritage. For travel planning, this offers a clear choice between outdoor activity, a distinctive geological site and historic buildings; the walk and the 22-kilometre treasure hunt differ considerably in duration and mode of travel.
