Meslin offers several different ways to explore its history: the megalithic site of Lande du Gras, the Chaise à Margot menhir and the Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul parish church. Other sites include the former Moulin Hervé mill and the Château de Cargouët. The stories span from prehistory to building phases in the 18th century and the history of the Chouannerie. Those interested in these traces will find that Meslin is about more than a single era or one type of monument.

Lande du Gras: Geology and History

Lande du Gras is a megalithic site with a distinctive geological feature: a significant outcrop of shiny sandstone is one of the few in Brittany that still displays this near-surface formation in its original form. Geology and history thus come together at this site. It is also associated with the history of the Chouannerie, as Hoche’s army set up a camp there.

When considering the site’s protected status, it is important to distinguish between the types of protection and their dates. One part is classified as a historic monument, while another is registered as a historic monument. The covered gallery was classified in 1962; the larger ensemble was registered in 1996. The two dates therefore refer to different parts or protection procedures. Together with the sandstone outcrop and the history of the Chouannerie, these provide several different perspectives on Lande du Gras.

Church and Building Phases in the Village Centre

The Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul stands in the centre of Meslin, within an enclosed area. Part of the former cemetery has been preserved there. The church itself cannot be assigned a single construction date: the nave dates from the 14th to 15th century, the eastern chapel was rebuilt in 1746, and the sacristy dates from 1755.

These details show a sequence of different building phases. Compared with the megalithic site, whose protection dates are 1962 and 1996, the church offers a different perspective on time: its building history spans the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The church and enclosed area are also in the heart of the village; the preserved cemetery area is another part of this local setting.

Menhir, Mill and Château

The Chaise à Margot is a 2.30-metre-high Neolithic menhir. Its shape can resemble an armchair. Its specific height and shape give this stone a distinct profile among Meslin’s historical sites. The Moulin Hervé represents a different kind of past: the very old mill was converted into a dwelling. The axle around which the now-vanished mill wheel turned is still visible.

The Château de Cargouët is another named historic site. It is located in the hamlet of Cargouët in Meslin, dates from the 17th century and is privately owned. The menhir, converted mill and château thus represent different historical forms: a prehistoric stone, a former working building with a visible technical remnant, and a château from a later period.

The Circular Route and Its Span of History

The “Sur les traces de Margot” circular route passes through Meslin and introduces periods ranging from prehistory to the Breton Chouannerie. Its stated starting point, however, is in Lamballe-Armor, at 2 Rue de la Chaise à Margot. This distinction is useful when planning: the route starts in Lamballe-Armor but passes through Meslin. No walking time or distance is specified.

In terms of its subject matter, the route spans prehistory to the Chouannerie. This adds a broader historical timeframe to the individual local stories without replacing the church’s building phases or the geological feature of Lande du Gras. If you want to understand Meslin through its history, you can distinguish between specific buildings, a menhir, geological features and the historical theme of the route.
