Vollore-Montagne offers several ways to discover the landscape: on foot along a yellow-marked circular trail, by mountain bike on one of the listed routes, or on a horseback ride lasting anywhere from an hour to several days. There are different ways to plan your choice: an approximate walking time for the hiking trail, distance and elevation gain for a mountain bike route, and various duration options at Les Paddocks. So you can decide whether you would rather spend the day walking, cycling or in the saddle.

Hiking among Rocks and History

The Le lit de la Vierge circular trail is 11 kilometres long and marked in yellow; the estimated walking time is about four hours, not including breaks. Allow extra time for breaks and check the route description and markings before setting off, as trail conditions can change locally.

The trail leads to a jumble of rocks featuring the Lit de la Vierge and offers views of the Alps, the Monts du Forez and the Chaîne des Puys. Its history is also part of the route’s character: it follows a former medieval boundary between Puy-de-Dôme and Loire. Royal boundary stones bearing coats of arms mark this historic border. The circular trail thus combines exercise and sweeping views with a tangible reminder of former territorial boundaries.

Rocky Landscapes and Far-reaching Views

At La Pierre Pamole, you’ll find an open site dotted with boulders, two orientation tables and exceptional 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. From there, the view extends across the Dore plain, the Limagne, the Chaîne des Puys, the Sancy massif and the Cantal massif. These named landscape areas give the viewpoint a broad perspective over the surrounding region.

The ZNIEFF natural inventory area 830005527 also includes Vollore-Montagne and lists marked hiking trails. It gives the area’s elevations as ranging from 612 to 1,093 metres. This range describes the landscape setting of the inventory area.

Mountain Biking: Route and Elevation Gain

The Espace VTT-FFC du massif des Bois Noirs lists several routes in Vollore-Montagne, including La Familiale, La Pierre Pamole and Le Lit de la Vierge. Before setting off, it’s a good idea to check details of the specific route and its signposting.

La Familiale, also known as Circuit n° 40, starts in Vollore-Montagne and is 17.7 kilometres long, with 424 metres of elevation gain. The route is rated easy to moderate and is family-friendly. It runs mostly above 800 metres and offers panoramas of the surrounding terrain and landscapes typical of the Forez.

The two activities offer different ways to plan your day: you can gauge Le lit de la Vierge by its approximate walking time, and La Familiale by its distance and elevation gain. This lets you weigh up the hike in terms of time and the mountain bike route in terms of distance and elevation, without assuming a cycling time.

Horseback Rides at Les Paddocks

Les Paddocks adds horseback rides to the hiking and mountain biking options. Rides last from an hour to several days and are suitable for beginners as well as experienced riders. The site is located above 1,000 metres in the Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park, among forests, high-altitude pastures and unspoilt landscapes. You can plan this activity over a different timeframe from the circular hiking trail or mountain bike route, choosing between a shorter ride and a multi-day format.
