Singles combines local history with trails through the Dordogne landscape and activities on the water. This means different questions come to the fore when planning: Would you like to include a marked circular walk, historical details in the village, or fishing and boating? The options differ not only in theme, but also in trail length and geographical scale.
Church architecture and local history
The choir and nave of the parish church of Saint-Nazaire appear to have been built around the boundary between the 12th and 13th centuries. A Gothic portal in Singles dates from the 14th century. These provide two separate historical reference points: the tentative dating of the church’s architectural elements and the later portal. They offer concrete chronological markers for exploring the village’s history.
Circular walks through varied landscapes
The walk at the Arpiat Bridge in Singles is 5.4 km long, follows a circular route and is marked in blue. It leads through the wooded slopes of the Dordogne Valley to the border between Puy-de-Dôme and Corrèze and to the confluence of the Dordogne and Burande rivers. The distance and circular route define the scope of the walk; the border region and confluence give it a specific geographical setting.
Another short circular walk, Les mines de la guinguette, crosses plateaus cut by the Dordogne and passes through the wooded valleys of the former coal plateau of the Massif Central. Compared with the wooded slopes around the Arpiat Bridge, the focus here is on plateaus and valleys. The walks therefore differ not only in name, but also in the landscapes they pass through.
L’Itinérêve – La Dordogne de Villages en Barrages covers a different scale: this 430 km circular route runs through the Dordogne gorges across Puy-de-Dôme, Cantal and Corrèze. Compared with the 5.4 km loop at the Arpiat Bridge, it is on a much larger scale and covers a broader geographical area.
By the water: fishing and boating
The Site de pêche du pont d’Arpiat is a second-category fishing area. Boats can also be launched from the same spot to travel on the 21 km-long Bort-les-Orgues reservoir. The reservoir lies on the borders of the Cantal, Corrèze and Puy-de-Dôme departments. Fishing and travelling on the reservoir therefore offer two different ways to enjoy the water: one focuses on the classified fishing area, the other on a trip across the expansive reservoir.
Gold panning on the Burande
At the event « Dans la peau des chercheurs d’or », an enthusiastic guide demonstrates various gold-panning techniques in the waters of the Burande. You must register with the tourist office or online to take part. Registration is therefore an essential part of your preparations if you plan to attend.
