Saint-Floret brings together a strong focus on architectural and art history with several nature and hiking themes. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes distinct: the Château de Saint-Floret and the Pont de la Pède represent different cultural attractions, while travertine, nature conservation and a short circular route shape a visit to the Sources salées de la Tête de Lion. Other routes, each with its own landscape character, offer further options for excursions.

Castle and bridge: two cultural attractions

The Château de Saint-Floret is a 13th-century feudal castle. The Pont de la Pède connects the two banks of the Couze Pavin; its oratory houses a Romanesque polychrome wooden statue of the Virgin in Majesty. Saint-Floret thus brings together two distinct cultural attractions: a medieval castle and a religious work of art in a bridge oratory. For planning purposes, you can choose between a focus on feudal history and one on Romanesque art; the bridge also connects the banks and features a specific named work.

Springs and circular route

The main spring of the Sources salées de la Tête de Lion feeds one of the most impressive travertine deposits in Auvergne. The Sources are part of the European Natura 2000 network. At the same time, the trail near the Sources leads to the wild gorges formed by the Couze Pavin. Geological interest, nature conservation and landscape are distinct aspects of this natural attraction. The discovery trail is a 1.3-kilometre circular route that takes about an hour; you can set aside roughly an hour for the trail itself.

From Saint-Floret, the Sources salées can be reached via the RD 26 in the direction of Saurier; there is a car park on the left. As access information may change, check the route before setting out.

Hikes through varied landscapes

The GR® de Pays Tour en Pays des Couzes – Boucle du Val d’Allier No. 1 passes through Saint-Floret. La Chaubasse offers views of the Sancy Massif, the Pic de Brionnet, the Chaubasse Plateau, the Couze Valley and Issoire. The Clémensat route crosses the Pont de la Pède and offers views of Saint-Floret and the gorges of the Couze Pavin; orchards, meadows and former terraced vineyards lie along the route. The difference is clear if you are choosing by landscape: La Chaubasse brings together named mountain, plateau, valley and town views; Clémensat combines views with a bridge crossing and agriculturally shaped land. The Pont de la Pède thus provides a tangible connection between the cultural attraction and the Clémensat route.

Plan your stay

When planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between time frames and priorities: an approximate duration is given for the Springs circular route, while La Chaubasse and Clémensat stand out mainly for their different landscape features. The castle and oratory offer separate cultural themes. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether culture, springs or hiking will be the main focus of your trip.
