Choosing a stay in Orcival can be guided by two questions: Should the Romanesque basilica and its pilgrimage tradition be the main focus, or would you like to explore trails through the landscape? The Maison de la Confiserie & du Chocolat adds an artisanal element. This makes culture, hiking and confectionery distinct interests to consider for your trip.
Basilica, Pilgrimage and History
The Basilica of Notre-Dame d’Orcival is located in the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d’Auvergne and is one of the five most important Romanesque churches in Auvergne. It has been protected as a historic monument since 1840 and is classified as a Monument historique. The building thus brings together its Romanesque heritage and an enduring religious tradition.
You can visit the basilica independently throughout the year during opening hours. As visiting arrangements may change, check the current visitor information before travelling.
During the annual pilgrimage on Ascension Day, the statue of the Virgin Mary is carried by barefoot men along the Stations of the Cross to the hamlet of “Tombeau de la Vierge.” The evening before, a torchlight procession begins at the Notre-Dame de la Source chapel. Details of the programme may change from year to year; if your trip is planned around this event, check the dates in advance.
The Notre-Dame de la Source chapel also has a history of its own: in the 18th century, it was closed for worship because of its condition; it was rebuilt in 1877. The pilgrimage traditions and the building’s history offer different ways to explore the town’s past.
Walking Trails and Landscape
The Roche Branlante d’Orcival can be reached on foot from the village. Formed by erosion, the trachyte block is seven metres long, 2.6 metres thick and 5.4 metres high. Comparing these measurements gives a sense of its size. Trail conditions can vary, so it is worth checking for updates before your visit.
The marked Le Puy Loup trail is a seasonal loop that is open only from mid-April to mid-October. Seasonal conditions can change; check the latest information before setting out.
The route to the Plateau du Guéry is a moderately difficult 14-kilometre loop in Orcival. It takes approximately four hours and 30 minutes to walk. Along the way, the route passes Lac du Guéry, at an altitude of 1,268 metres, crosses high mountain plateaus and reaches the summit of Puy Gros.
The two hiking options involve different planning considerations: for Le Puy Loup, the limited season is important; for the route to the Plateau du Guéry, you can take into account its difficulty, length and approximate walking time. Orcival is also one of the 28 stages of the 3,000-kilometre Grand Tour Auvergne Rhône Alpes, making it part of a longer tour through the region.
Artisanal and Culinary Discoveries
Chocolate, fruit jellies and pralines are made by hand at the Maison de la Confiserie & du Chocolat in Orcival. This adds another local facet to the religious and landscape-related themes. The range may change; if you are planning to visit for a particular product, check in advance.
