Anyone wishing to hike in Nébouzat can choose between a tour to Croix de la Croze with a clearly specified duration, a route to Puy de Pourcharet focused on scenic views, and a short detour to the Cascade des Saliens. There is also an orientation board near Récoleine, traces of rural heritage, and a market for local producers and craftspeople. This gives you a specific focus when choosing where to stay: hiking and volcanic landscapes, a waterfall, or village history. Check the market schedule in advance; the recurring schedule may change.
Hikes and Waterfall
The hike to Croix de la Croze starts in the center of Nébouzat and passes through meadows at the foot of the Chaîne des Puys volcanoes. It is 3.6 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 60 meters, and takes one hour. These figures provide a concrete timeframe for planning your day, while the route also combines meadows with a volcanic setting. Human and animal figures are engraved on the base of Croix de la Croze: they depict the Adoration of the Magi, as well as a scene with a musician and dancers. This distinctive motif is therefore as much a part of this hike as the landscape.
The route to Puy de Pourcharet offers a different perspective on the landscape. It crosses a varied agricultural plateau of forests and pastureland. Along the way, views open out over the Combrailles, numerous volcanic cones known as puys, the Chaîne des Puys, and the Massif du Sancy. Here, the focus is on the plateau, its pastures and forests, and distant views; at the Croix, the hike combines with a striking relief of figures.
The Cascade des Saliens is located near the village of Nébouzat and comprises three distinct waterfalls. It can be reached from the village of Les Saliens on the RD2089 or from Camping des Dômes; the round trip on foot takes 20 minutes. Reaching the third waterfall requires a short hike and sturdy footwear. Trails may vary by season, and wet conditions can affect access. Check trail conditions locally.
Landscape and Village History
Near Récoleine, the landscape is connected to a trace of history. An orientation board stands at the site of a former chapel, which was destroyed by lightning in 1946. From one of the highest points in the commune, the board gives walkers a sweeping view of the landscape. Flocks of sheep can still be seen on the heights of Récoleine, and some former shepherds’ huts remain visible on walks. Present-day flocks and visible traces of earlier shepherding place different periods of rural life side by side.
Surviving or restored landmarks include old bread ovens. One of them is the oven at La Bughe, north of the village center. It adds an architectural detail from the village’s history to the hiking and scenic-view themes.
Market and Scheduling
The market for local producers and craftspeople is held year-round on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; there is no market on December 24. As the recurring schedule may change, check the dates before your visit.
For planning purposes, two specific durations can be compared: one hour for the hike to the Croix and 20 minutes for the round trip to the Cascade. Reaching the third waterfall requires a short hike and sturdy footwear.
