Grandval offers two distinct points of interest in cultural history: the Église Saint-Pierre and the Couderc. For time outdoors, the Route Moulins des Donnes can also be assessed by its length, duration and detours. This gives you different focal points for planning your trip: architectural history, village organisation and a specific circular route.
Église Saint-Pierre and Auvergnat Gothic Architecture
The Église Saint-Pierre is a unified and complete example of a 15th-century Auvergnat Gothic church. It is also typical of the Livradois school of architecture. These classifications offer different points of reference: the first identifies the church type and its period, while the second establishes its connection to the Livradois school of architecture. By decree dated 9 October 1969, the church was classified as a Monument historique. Its construction period, architectural classification and protected status thus describe different aspects of the same building. Visitors interested in regional church architecture can explore Saint-Pierre through these features.
The Couderc in Village History
The Couderc is at the heart of village organisation in Grandval. It was also a social meeting place, where people debated village affairs and celebrated. At the same time, the Couderc served as a strictly regulated grazing area. This place thus brought together village organisation, community life and clearly regulated use as pasture. This social and practical aspect complements the church’s architectural history when exploring Grandval. The two cultural themes complement each other without addressing the same question: Saint-Pierre provides an architectural classification, while the Couderc offers insight into village organisation and social use.
Route Moulins des Donnes: Circular Walk and Views
The Route Moulins des Donnes is a 6.5-kilometre circular walk that takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. Along the way, there are views of the Monts du Forez and Pierre-Sur-Haute, the highest point in the Monts du Forez at 1,634 metres. The distance and duration provide two practical points of reference for planning; the views add a prominent landmark in the landscape. The surrounding area includes countryside and woodland, where there are herds of livestock and guard dogs.
The route includes a ten-minute round-trip detour to the Moulins des Donnes and a five-minute round-trip detour to a Calvary. It also passes a washhouse in the village of Fournier.
