The Pont suspendu crossed the Allier between Issoire’s left bank and Parentignat’s right bank. In 1831, the bridge made it possible to cross the river instead of using the ferries at Parentignat, Orbeil and Les Pradeaux. Another important date followed on 29 October 1975: a decree listed the Pont suspendu as a historic monument. The bridge’s history can thus be viewed in two stages—as part of the river crossing and later as a protected monument.

Château history and park design

The Château de Parentignat also offers a tangible point of interest for a stay focused on history and culture. A 45-minute guided tour takes you through a sequence of furnished rooms featuring a private art collection. Access may vary by season, so it is advisable to check the date of your visit in advance. The Louis XV room offers a distinctive highlight, with 18th-century furniture by cabinetmaker Nicolas Heurtaut on display.

The château also has a park whose English-style design dates to the late 18th century. A pond with an island was created there after the French Revolution. These two details tell different aspects of the estate’s story: the style reflects its design history, while the pond marks a later change to the park.

Geocaching, orienteering and cycling routes

The grounds of the Château de Parentignat feature a GPS-based treasure hunt: geocaching. At the end of the activity, you answer a quiz about the history of the château and the region. This gives the activity a historical connection, rather than limiting it to finding waypoints.

An orienteering course leads from the courtyard of honour across the estate’s 15-hectare meadow to its three-hectare English-style park. These figures give a clear sense of scale: the meadow covers five times the area of the park.

Cyclists can follow two named route references. The Circuit du Val d’Allier – Châteaux et villages au pays de la reine Margot leads to Parentignat and its château. The Via Allier follows the signed “accès V70 sud” connection from Issoire towards Varennes-sur-Usson via Parentignat. These routes offer different points of reference for the ride: the first highlights the château and villages in its name, while the second connects Issoire and Varennes-sur-Usson. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check the route before setting off.

Choose Parentignat as your destination

The château, park and bridge offer different ways to experience the town: you can explore the furnishings of the rooms, the development of the park or the history of crossing the Allier. Geocaching and orienteering add activities on the château grounds to these cultural themes, while the cycling connections offer another perspective on Parentignat as part of named routes. Which aspect matters most to your trip planning depends on whether you want to focus on cultural history, park design or a bike ride.
