Labesserette brings together religious heritage, a specific memorial site and the landscape of the Veinazès. This offers different focal points to help you plan your trip: architecture and art in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the story commemorated by the Pierre des gendarmes stele, or the “La cuvette du Veinazès” circular trail. Building history, remembrance and landscape are distinct points of interest for a stay.
Church and Pietà: Building History and Art
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Labesserette is predominantly Late Gothic. The Rosary Chapel in the same church was built in the early Romanesque-Gothic style in the late 14th or early 15th century. Two different architectural classifications therefore meet here: the church’s predominant style and the chapel’s more specific dating. To understand the building’s history, it is worth distinguishing between the church as a whole and the chapel, which can be dated more precisely.
Mysterious carved depictions of people and animals add another dimension to the architectural story. Visitors interested in the church can look beyond its stylistic history to the figurative motifs as well.
One particular work inside the church is the Pietà: a polychrome, carved-stone movable work of art protected as a historic monument. It measures 62 centimetres in height. Its material, colouring and dimensions offer different clues to understanding the work. In 1987, the additional layer of paint was removed. This date belongs to the Pietà’s conservation history and should not be confused with the time it was created. The artwork’s design and a specific intervention to its painted finish are thus both part of its story.
A Memorial Site with a Specific Location
The Pierre des gendarmes stele commemorates a historical event: it was erected in 1939 in memory of the two gendarmes ACIER and AUZOLLE, who were killed at this location on 9 March 1800. The two dates have different meanings: 1939 marks the stele’s erection, while 9 March 1800 is the date of the event it commemorates. For directions, it is on a small path about 100 metres from the former national road, along the route from Montsalvy towards Polvrières. Check local path conditions before setting out.
Circular Trail and Landscape in the Veinazès
The “La cuvette du Veinazès” circular trail starts in the car park opposite the school and town hall in Labesserette. This gives you a clearly identified starting point for planning the walk. Check local path conditions before setting out. Labesserette lies in the Veinazès basin, a microregion of bocage countryside and foothills covered with chestnut trees. This landscape offers a distinct reason to choose the area, alongside its historical attractions.
Local storytelling also adds to the picture of the area: according to a traditional tale, an inn was called “Maison rouge” (“Red House”) following an incident involving the Drac. This is a different perspective from the dated history of the memorial stele: here, the focus is on a story passed down through generations, while there it is on a specific occasion commemorated. Together with the church, the Pietà and the Veinazès, these offer a range of distinct themes to shape your stay in Labesserette.
