A 1642 cross and a hiking trail that is accessible only in dry conditions mark two distinct reasons to visit Freix-Anglards: local history and a walk with a clear planning requirement. The village also offers historic architecture, restored houses, views of the Monts du Cantal from its northern edge, and a municipal picnic area. You can decide whether to focus on culture, scenery or a hike that depends on the weather.

Croix de Sarrus and local heritage

The historic Croix de Sarrus in Freix-Anglards dates from 1642 and is made of basalt. On 6 October 2018, a new Croix de Sarrus was installed in Sarrus. It is a work by sculptor Robert Salat, created in collaboration with Jean-Claude Carlat. The dates offer two perspectives: a historic cross from the 17th century and a later artistic work.

The Croix de Sarrus is located where the villages of Sarrus, Bassignac and Vernuéjouls meet. Freix-Anglards’ local heritage also includes the Four à Pain de Beynaguet. Bassignac is a village built along a road that overlooks the surrounding area. It has beautiful barns, chicken coops and fountains. The roofs include both flat and sloping forms, as well as pyramid-shaped roofs.

Architecture and views of the Monts du Cantal

Historic architecture and restored houses shape the character of Freix-Anglards. Visitors interested in rural building styles can take in both individual heritage sites and the village as a whole. The features described in Bassignac add a distinctive character: barns, chicken coops, fountains and varied roof shapes.

From the northern edge of the village, you can enjoy impressive views of the Monts du Cantal. This clearly defined viewpoint adds a scenic dimension to the village’s history and architecture. If you would like to consider the landscape as well as culture when choosing your destination, it provides a specific point of reference.

Hiking only in dry conditions

The PR La Croix Haute hiking trail in Freix-Anglards is 7 km long and includes a stream crossing at a ford. It is accessible only in dry conditions. This requirement is essential for planning: take it into account when choosing your hiking day, and check that conditions are dry before setting out. If hiking is an important reason for your stay, dry conditions should also factor into your choice of travel dates.

Bordes picnic area

The Bordes picnic area is a municipal facility set up by the commune of Freix-Anglards. It is open every day throughout the year. As facilities can change, check current availability before your visit. This means there are two different conditions to consider when planning your time: the picnic area is open every day throughout the year, while the PR La Croix Haute is accessible only in dry conditions.
