Urdos combines a distinctive railway history and fortifications with a variety of trails through mountain scenery. The Somport Tunnel and Fort du Portalet give the town a specific historical focus; at the same time, routes lead from Urdos towards Somport and to destinations such as the Refuge du Larry. For planning, it is useful to consider the options separately: pilgrimage routes and geology, hikes with stated walking times, nature observation, or cross-country skiing in winter.
Railway and Fortification History
The Somport Tunnel on the Pau–Canfranc railway line was built by the Compagnie du Midi between 1910 and 1914. It was electrified and put into service in 1928. In Urdos, the tunnel is listed as a Monument historique.
Fort du Portalet stands in Urdos on a cliff above the Gave d’Aspe. Guided tours lead through galleries, barracks and ramparts. The visit offers a different focus from the tunnel: rather than a railway line, it centers on the different areas of a fortification.
Hiking at Somport and to the Refuge du Larry
The route from Urdos to Somport follows the pilgrimage routes from Gare d’Urdos to Col du Somport. It also gives access to the geological treasures of the upper Aspe Valley. Here, a historic route and a geological perspective on the mountain region come together. Check mountain conditions before setting out.
Another hiking option is Route No. 67 to the Refuge du Larry, at an elevation of 1,724 metres. The trail begins at the former customs buildings in Urdos and climbs to the refuge. Along the way, it passes through a wild valley with expansive pastures where shepherds and sheep can be found. At the Estive du Larry, you may meet the shepherd seasonally and sample cheese made using traditional methods. During the season, you can buy cheese at the Cabane d’Escouret. Seasonal conditions may affect access to the route; check them before setting out.
Hikes and Nature Observation
Hike No. 20 to Lac d’Estaens is rated easy and takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes on foot. On the French side, it passes through the Parc national des Pyrénées and offers a beautiful view of the high valley. For this hike, you therefore have both an approximate walking time and a stated difficulty rating to help you plan.
The “Terre de rencontres” discovery trail has five nature observation stops. This offers a different experience from the hike to Lac d’Estaens: the trail focuses on individual observation stops, while the route to the lake is characterized by its walking time, difficulty rating and view of the high valley.
Winter and Relaxation at Espace Somport
Espace Somport is located in the heart of the Parc national des Pyrénées. Cross-country skiing is possible there in winter; check current operating conditions before planning this activity. Espace Somport also has a wellness area with a sauna and an outdoor hot tub on a terrace overlooking the Pyrenees. Availability of these facilities may vary by season.
