The Church of Saint-Sylvestre, the château and the Les Trois Croix viewpoint offer different perspectives on architecture, history and landscape in Sainte-Colome. The Les Buis route also connects architectural and historical heritage with hilly, forested and rural landscapes. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to specific interests: architectural history, village history, panoramic views or a hiking route that brings heritage and landscape together.

The church and château: two sides of architectural history

The Church of Saint-Sylvestre was classified as a historic monument in its entirety by decree of 12 July 2001. Its massive square bell tower dates from the 12th century; construction of the church was completed in stages up to the 16th century. The church is considered a landmark of Flamboyant Gothic architecture. These details place different periods in context: the age of one architectural feature, the completion of the building’s development and its later designation as a protected monument. The church can thus be appreciated both through its long history of construction and its place in art history.

At the Château de Sainte-Colome, protection covers the château itself, the outer bailey, the remains of the fortifications and the path to the château, lined with the remains of walls. These features were entered on the register of protected heritage by decree of 29 April 1999. The château was burned down during the Wars of Religion. The approximately 20-metre-high watchtower was used to communicate with the surrounding fortresses of Castet and Iseste: fires visible from far away made it possible to send signals. The château’s destruction and the tower’s communication function at the time can therefore be considered distinct aspects of its history.

Les Trois Croix: views and past traditions

The Les Trois Croix viewpoint overlooks the village centre and offers panoramic views of the foothills and the first slopes of the Pyrenees. In the past, Rogation processions and torchlight processions were also held there. Les Trois Croix can therefore be understood both through its landscape views and through past religious and cultural traditions.

Les Buis: heritage and landscapes on foot

The Les Buis hiking route connects Sainte-Colome’s architectural and historical heritage with hilly, forested and rural landscapes. It is 6 kilometres long and has a cumulative elevation gain of 220 metres. The distance and ascent offer two different reference points for planning your day. Check the route details before setting out.

Discover the village digitally

Wivisites offers an audio guide to discovering Sainte-Colome’s municipal heritage. The tour takes visitors to notable sites in the village and covers its history, architecture and landscape heritage. Terra Aventura offers a different format: a free, smartphone-based geocaching treasure hunt in Sainte-Colome. The route is accessible to everyone all year round. While Wivisites presents the village’s history and features through an audio guide, Terra Aventura focuses on a smartphone treasure hunt. Check that the apps are available before using them.
