Boucau can be explored through three themes: its location on the Adour, just a short walk from the ocean; a natural area in the town center; and cultural history with visible traces of the past. Bois Guilhou and the Cale offer different perspectives on greenery and water, while the Cité des Forges and the Apollo turn attention to architecture and culture. When planning a stay, you can focus on walks, the river or the history of the town.

Urban Greenery and Water

Bois Guilhou is a 20-hectare Espaces Naturels Sensibles (ENS) area in the center of Boucau. This natural area has five marked trails and picnic tables. The trails offer different ways to explore the area, while the tables provide a convenient place to take a break during your visit.

Another green space is the public garden on Rue Joseph Saint-André, also in the town center. It is open for walks and relaxation and has picnic tables. While Bois Guilhou offers visitors a sense of direction through its size, ENS status and five marked trails, the garden focuses on walking and relaxation in a public space.

Boucau lies on the Adour and is just a short walk from the ocean. The Cale is a public walking route with views of the Adour. This means you can include the river in your exploration on foot, rather than focusing your stay solely on the green spaces in the town center.

The former Cale dates back to a structure built in 1732 to protect the boats of pilots and mooring crews. Today, the site’s walking route function meets a tangible maritime past.

For rail travel, Boucau has a TER station on the Hendaye–Bordeaux line. Check the timetable for your travel date if you are planning to arrive by train.

Cultural History in the Townscape

The Cité des Forges extends across Boucau and Tarnos and lies southwest of Tarnos, near the Adour. It has been protected as a Zone de Protection du Patrimoine Architectural, Urbain et Paysager (ZPPAUP) since 2006. Its connection to both municipalities is important context: the Cité belongs not to Boucau alone.

The construction campaigns of the Cité des Forges date to 1884, 1890 and 1898. These three dates mark separate construction campaigns and divide the area’s architectural history into several stages.

A route with five information panels explores the town’s historical heritage. There is also a permanent exhibition installed in a public space. Audio versions of the exhibition are available in Basque, Gascon and French.

The Apollo is a historic cultural center in the Art Deco style. Cultural and leisure events take place there throughout the year. The Apollo thus complements the historic sites and permanent exhibition with a year-round program of events.
