The Arbéroue runs through Saint-Esteben and is the municipality’s main watercourse. Garraldako Erreka drains its western part. If you’d like to explore the landscape on foot, the Garralda and Eltzarruze hikes offer two different perspectives on the Basque mountains and the valley.

Hikes through meadows and up to the ridgelines

The Garralda hike passes through meadows, along small paths and through open woodland, with views of the Basque mountains. The Eltzarruze route focuses on the climb from Saint-Esteben to the ridgelines; from there, too, the views extend across the mountains and the valley. You can choose based on the landscape that most interests you along the way: changing stretches of meadow and forest, or the ascent to the ridgelines. Check the trail signs before setting off.

Another hike with views of Saint-Esteben is Belekarre. However, it does not start in Saint-Esteben, but in nearby Saint-Martin-d'Arbéroue; at one point, the route offers a view of the village. If you’re interested in a group hike, the Ibilki Club organizes a trip each week with around twenty hikers. Check the participation requirements locally.

Church, house history and Basque traditions

The Church of Saint-Étienne is a traditional Basque church with a single-nave layout, a panelled ceiling and two levels of galleries. Following damage during the Wars of Religion in the 17th century, it was probably rebuilt or substantially altered. The porch contains disc-shaped gravestones, and similar stones can also be found in the cemetery. One may date from the 15th century. The church also houses an 18th-century altarpiece.

Sorhaburu also brings together several layers of history. The noble house was mentioned in 1249 and built on the foundations of a 13th-century castle. Historically, it served as a customs house and hospice. It was also intended to serve as an official house representing the power of the Kingdom of Navarre in the region. These functions offer a different historical perspective from the church’s architecture.

One of Saint-Esteben’s recurring religious celebrations is Besta Berri, the Feast of Corpus Christi in honour of the Blessed Sacrament. It is celebrated on two consecutive Sundays in June. Songs and dances feature in the procession and church service. As the exact dates vary from year to year, it is advisable to check them locally before your trip.

Pelota, strength sports and practical transport

The covered Sanoki court in the centre is dedicated to Basque pelota. Various disciplines, including main nue, pala and xare, can be played there, and spectator stands are available. Arberoue Kirolak also offers the opportunity to learn about Basque strength sports such as tug-of-war, straw lifting and cart lifting. If you’d like to take part, coordinate with the club.

For trips to shops, medical services and transport connections, Txik Txak offers a dial-a-ride service with nearby pick-up. The service is available by reservation; check the current booking procedures before travelling. A visit to the Betatua burial cave, on the other hand, should not be part of your plans: it contains a human skull and is closed for its protection.
