In Bérenx, village history, a trail through fields and forests, and a cycling route between Salies-de-Béarn and Orthez come together. When planning a stay, visitors can focus on these different aspects of the area: the church in the village centre, the viewpoint on Lous Arrius, or a visit in July for the Fête Communale. For planning, it is worth distinguishing the set dates of community events from activities on the trails.

Church, history and the Fête Communale

The Church of Saint Pierre Saint Jean Baptiste stands in the centre of Bérenx and was rebuilt in the 18th century. Another historical landmark is the Château de Mongiscard: it was destroyed in 1621 during the Wars of Religion, after Béarn had been annexed to France. The two dates point to different chapters of history; the church shapes the village centre, while the history of the Château concerns its destruction in the 17th century.

Festivities also have a regular place in the annual calendar. The Fête Communale has been held in July since 1987, usually on the second or third weekend of the month. The festival weekend is organised for village residents, their friends and families. As the exact date can change from year to year, check it if you want to plan your trip around the festival.

The programme is not the same every year. It may include a country breakfast, a gastronomic meal, paella, grilled food and a tapas evening. The list therefore describes possible elements, not the programme for every festival weekend. If you are coming for a particular meal or evening, check before your trip what is planned for that year.

On foot, by bike and with time for a break

The Lous Arrius trail starts near the Auberge du Relais. It passes through farmland and forests to a viewpoint overlooking the hills of Salies-de-Béarn. The trail therefore brings together two specific impressions: the cultivated landscape around Bérenx and the view of the hills. Those who would rather focus on a cycling trip than a walking trail can take the V81 as another way to explore the area.

The V81 cycling route passes through Bérenx on its way from Salies-de-Béarn to Orthez. A small bridge leads to the square by the village church and school. This gives the route a clear connection to the village centre, while Lous Arrius leads to a viewpoint over the surrounding hills. These are different routes with different points of focus. Check the current route before setting off, as individual route details can change independently of the overall route.

Bérenx has a picnic area with two tables and a rubbish bin. It can be reached by bicycle, car or on foot. This information helps visitors plan to use the area as a separate place to stop; no connection to the trail or the V81 is described. Those weighing up several activities for a stay can treat the viewpoint, the ride through the village and a break as separate options.

Community activities and dates

Quilles de Six offers another way to get to know Bérenx. The Quilhous Bérenxois hold training every Friday at 6 pm behind the school, and visitors are welcome to learn about the sport. As arrangements for taking part may change, it is advisable to check before visiting. The weekly training time is quite different from the annual festival weekend in July: if you want to attend a particular event, include it in your travel plans and check the relevant details in good time.
