Etchebar combines a scenic walking route with historic steles and a farm that offers visits exclusively as guided tours by appointment. Specific route details help with planning; in the village, a 15th-century stele and other historic sites also tell of the area’s past.
Valley and Landscape
The Etchebar area is limited to a small valley through which a tributary of the Gave Uhaitza flows. Agriculture helps keep the landscape varied. Etchebar is also part of the 8,600-hectare Montagnes du Pic des Escaliers Natura 2000 site.
The Tour d’Etchebar also passes through this landscape. Very old trees in the Erbexe forest contribute to its wilder character. From a slope of Pic Salhagañe, panoramic views extend across much of the valley and the nearby Béarn. The route also reaches Pic Bizay.
Planning the Tour d’Etchebar
The route is 12.3 kilometres long, has 550 metres of elevation gain and is rated moderate. The stated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes. These details help you estimate how much time to allow for the hike. Check the route specifications again before setting out.
To reach the hike, drive from Tardets via Lichans. A viewpoint on Pic Salhagañe and the Erbexe forest give the route different scenic highlights; Pic Bizay is another named point along the way.
Steles and Historic Sites
The disc-shaped steles of Etchebar stand between the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the cemetery. A small platform offers a view of the intricately carved stones from above. Anyone interested in the story behind a particular stele can also find it at Berteretxe: this disc-shaped stele dates from the 15th century and commemorates the murder of a farmer from Larrau by the Viscount of Mauléon in front of his fiancée’s house.
Near Pic Bizay lies Gastelariko botxia, a protohistoric site used to keep watch for people arriving in the valley. The ruins of the house “Aretalepoa” are another historical point of reference. This remote place was inhabited in the last century. Together, these sites reflect different periods: from a place used to observe the valley, to the memory of an event from the 15th century, to a house where people still lived in the last century.
Farm Visit by Appointment
La Kabane à Kabris is located above the village of Etchebar. The farm has Poitevin goats, a few Jersey cattle and Konik ponies; the animals kept there may change. The goats are milked by hand, and all the milk is processed on the farm. Goat’s cheese and mixed cheeses are sold there; availability may vary.
Visits are exclusively guided and available by prior appointment only. Be sure to arrange your visit with the farm in advance. This lets you plan the visit as a separate activity rather than assume it is open to spontaneous visitors.
Getting to the Hike
You can park just behind the fish-farm junction, 500 metres before the centre of Etchebar. This information applies to the Tour d’Etchebar. Check the parking situation before you travel; like the route specifications, it is part of the practical preparation for this outing.
