Lourdios-Ichère is located in the Vallée d’Aspe between Issor and Sarrance in the Pyrénées Béarnaises. The Gave de Lourdios is part of the local water network and contributes to Lourdios-Ichère’s green ecosystem. The destination has several distinct facets: a hiking trail with views of the steep-sided valley, Notre Dame des Bergers, a place of worship carved into the rock, and insights into cheese-making and mountain farming. The Gave is part of the local water network, while the hiking trail opens up views of the steep-sided valley.

Hiking Trail and Valley Views

The N°5 Fougeraies de Laünde hiking trail is an easy 5.2 km walk for families, with an elevation gain of 310 m. The distance, easy rating and elevation gain describe different aspects of planning a walk; together, they provide a more complete picture than distance alone. Above Lourdios-Ichère, the trail climbs and offers views of the steep-sided Lourdios valley.

Notre Dame des Bergers, a place of worship, lies along the hiking trail. In 1948, this site was carved into the rock using dynamite; a footbridge leads to it. The route thus combines views of the steep-sided valley with a specific religious site and a precisely dated origin.

Activities with a Booking Requirement or Seasonal Availability

Scenic horseback rides with Jo Chimier are available in Lourdios-Ichère by reservation. If you plan this activity, check availability directly with the provider before your trip. This lets you consider the ride as a separate option alongside the walking trail, without conflating the two activities.

GAEC Lassalle is a stop on the Ossau-Iraty Cheese Route and welcomes visitors by appointment only. If you plan a visit, book an appointment in advance.

At the Cabane de Saoudarie above Lourdios, visitors can learn about the life of the Lassalle family on the summer pasture from June to September. Check the arrangements for the current season before your trip. These two farming-related experiences answer different planning questions: a visit to GAEC requires an appointment, while the Cabane’s visiting period and arrangements for the current season are relevant.

Mountain Farming and Culture

The film «Les clés de la montagne» at the «Ça-ï Ça-ï» Écomuseum showcases the landscapes of Haut-Béarn and the know-how of the people who continue to sustain mountain farming today. Its perspective can be set alongside a direct insight into life on the summer pasture: one focuses on the life of the Lassalle family, the other on the landscape and farming knowledge of Haut-Béarn. Together, they present two different scales—the life of a summer pasture and the region’s mountain farming.
