In Guéthary, coastal scenery, art and history are different facets of the town. At the Colline de Cenitz, you can explore a protected natural area; the Pierre Lious terrace offers views of the ocean and the coast. The museum, church and harbor, in turn, tell the story of art collections and various historical periods. This lets you plan your trip around whether you want to focus on nature, cultural heritage or a cycling tour.

Coast, Nature and Harbor

The Colline de Cenitz is a 1.2-hectare nature reserve on the edge of the tidal zone. The Conservatoire du Littoral acquired the site in 2003; it is managed by the commune of Guéthary. Narrow, sunken paths wind through heath and gorse. The protected natural area also includes butterflies protected under Natura 2000, as well as protected plant species.

Another perspective is offered by the Pierre Lious terrace: from this viewpoint, you can observe the ocean, the Parlementia wave and the coastal panorama from Biarritz to Fontarabie. While Cenitz focuses on a limited natural area in the tidal zone, the panorama from the terrace extends far along the coast.

The harbor also has its own historical milestones. The breakwater dates from 1891, and the promenade on the mole was built in 1936. The two dates refer to different harbor features and help distinguish the breakwater and promenade as separate construction phases.

Church, Museum and Roman Heritage

The Église Saint-Nicolas has been listed in its entirety as a Monument historique since August 3, 2001. Its main construction phases date from the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. The dating shows that the present building has been shaped by several periods.

The Musée de Guéthary is located on the ground floor of the neo-Basque Villa Saraleguinea. It displays the donation of the sculptor Georges Clément de Swiecinski, comprising sculptures, ceramics and numerous drawings. Since 1985, the museum has also organized contemporary art exhibitions in painting, sculpture or photography from May to October. Dates may vary.

Another historical thread leads to the train station: Roman remains were discovered on its grounds in 1984. Subsequent excavations revealed a factory for producing salted fish dating from the early imperial period. The museum’s Roman collection notably features an exceptional funerary inscription.

Plan Cultural Events and Tours

Pelota games, singing, dancing, markets and traditional festivals are scheduled throughout the year in the central village square. When planning, it is worth comparing these with the museum’s seasonal exhibition program: contemporary exhibitions are scheduled from May to October, but their dates may vary. If you are interested in both, check the respective event dates before your trip.

For some exercise, try the “Guéthary, un balcon sur l'océan” cycling loop. It starts in Guéthary, is 19 kilometers long, takes 2 hours 30 minutes and has a moderate difficulty level. The route can also be started at Saint-Jean-de-Luz train station; a TER train connection is planned for the initial journey. Check the timetable and route conditions before your tour.

As part of the Routes de la Terre, two geological information panels on the Jetée des Alcyons correspond to video stations Nos. 8 and 9. Check the condition of the panels on site. The tourist office provides practical information on museum opening hours, restaurants and public transport, as well as bus excursions to Bilbao and the Guggenheim, to Espelette and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, and to Pamplona and San Sebastián. These offers may change; inquire about the latest information if needed.

For a focus on landscape and activity, Cenitz, the Pierre Lious terrace and the cycling loop offer different starting points. Those more interested in cultural heritage will find topics to explore at the church, in the museum, at the harbor and around the Roman finds.
