Poudenas sits on a hill in the Gélise Valley. There are several ways to explore the village, with different points of focus: the history of the Château, the lanes and their church, or paths offering views of the village and its rural architecture. This lets you give more weight to architectural history or outdoor activities, according to your interests.

The Château: history and landscaped park

The Château de Poudenas dates from the 13th century and is classified as a historic monument. Its history includes a striking transformation: it developed from a medieval fortress into a grand residence in the 16th and 17th centuries. Thus, the fortified medieval complex and its later residential function belong to different chapters in the château’s history.

The Château has an English-style landscaped park with about 100 different species of trees and plants. The designed landscape is therefore a subject in its own right, alongside the history of the architecture. The approximate number of species gives an impression of the park’s variety without claiming an exact total.

Guided tours of the Château are available by prior appointment. Confirm the date before you travel. Poudenas itself is freely accessible year-round; local access conditions may change. You can therefore treat a visit to the village and a guided château tour as two separate planning considerations.

Lanes, church and bridge

The lanes of Poudenas lead to a Romanesque church with a square bell tower. This gives a stroll through the village a clear destination and offers two specific architectural features to look out for: the Romanesque church and the shape of its tower.

Another architectural feature is Poudenas’s former post house. On the first floor, it has a gallery supported by arches. Here, the focus is less on the Château’s long history and more on a specific architectural element: the upper-floor gallery supported by arches.

The old Roman bridge offers panoramic views of Poudenas. This provides a different perspective from a stroll through the lanes: there, you encounter individual buildings and their details, while from the bridge you can take in the village as a whole.

Routes with different points of focus

The “Mézin, la Médiévale vers Poudenas l’Italienne” route is designated for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. These three activities give you specific options when planning. Check local route conditions before setting out.

The “De Mézin, la Médiévale à Poudenas, l’Italienne” route offers a different waypoint: Poudenas comes into view after four kilometres along the former railway line that connected Agen with Mont-de-Marsan. The old railway track and the moment when the village appears in view give this route its own historical and scenic character.

On several walking trails from Poudenas, you can discover two half-timbered dovecotes in the direction of Arbussan. They offer a specific point of interest for walkers interested in rural architecture. The routes thus have different points of focus: one is designated for three activities, another follows a former railway line, and several walking trails feature the dovecotes.

Planning your stay

When planning your visit, consider whether the château’s history or the village and its paths are more important to you. If you plan to take a guided tour of the Château, remember that you need to book in advance and confirm the date beforehand. The lanes, church and view from the Roman bridge offer different points of interest for exploring the village; the routes add designated activities and rural buildings to these village highlights.
