Moncrabeau looks back on 2,000 years of history and has a cultural and architectural heritage that can be explored in a variety of ways: at an annual festival, in museum collections, at historic buildings and in a landscape dotted with medieval hamlets. The different timing arrangements are particularly useful when planning a trip: one event takes place on a fixed date in August, while other visits are seasonal or available only by prior arrangement.

The Festival of Liars: an August date

The Festival of Liars takes place in Moncrabeau every year on the first Sunday in August. The programme includes the election and crowning of the Roi des Menteurs (King of Liars). If you are planning your stay around a clearly dated event, this gives you a specific point of reference when choosing your travel dates. Check the event dates before finalising your trip.

Everyday life and haute couture at the Musée Michel Goma

The Musée Michel Goma brings together two different perspectives. One section shows clothing and material aspects of life among the people of Moncrabeau from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century. Another area is devoted to haute couture designer Michel Goma, who was born in Moncrabeau. The exhibition there comprises more than 2,000 drawings and 60 garments. Local ways of life and one designer with his extensive body of work are presented side by side, while telling distinct stories.

A garden of aromatic plants is also part of the museum visit. It adds another dimension to the visitor experience; it is not merely a reference to the historic clothing or design pieces. If cultural history and fashion are of particular interest to you, you can take these different themes into account when deciding what to see.

A château with seasonal guided tours

The Château de Pomarède in the commune of Moncrabeau was built in the 18th century and is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. A descendant of the family leads the guided tours. They include the Gascon manor house, the park with its century-old trees and the imposing dovecote. The visit therefore combines architecture with the design of the estate. Tours are available seasonally; confirm the specific visit date before you travel.

Hamlets and the landscape of the Albret

The landscape around Moncrabeau extends from the hillsides of the Albret across the valleys of the Auvignon, Baïse and Osse. The area’s medieval hamlets include Artigues, Pouy-sur-l’Osse, Riqué, Gardère and Saint-Cirice. Churches, châteaux, farms and dovecotes are among the architectural features described there. These place names and building types offer a different perspective on the landscape from the museum collections: here, the focus is on scattered hamlets and their buildings; there, on clothing, everyday objects and fashion.

Guided tour or orienteering course

The Circuit Menteur is a guided tour that groups of adults and children can take throughout the year by prior arrangement. Booking and group organisation are therefore part of planning for this format. Le Moncrab’O offers a different way to explore: the orienteering course with checkpoints takes place in the village and has two versions, “Tranquillou” and “Speedou”. The two activities differ not only in subject but also in how a visit is organised: a guided tour by prior arrangement on the one hand, and an orienteering course with named versions on the other.

The festival is held on the first Sunday in August, while tours of the château are seasonal and the Circuit Menteur requires prior booking. Plan around the activity that matters most for your stay, then include the other cultural and landscape themes in your selection.
