Renaissance history, a year-round performance programme and a green recreational area give Marmande its varied character. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between architectural history, performing arts, time outdoors and local produce. The Église Notre-Dame complex, Théâtre Comœdia, Plaine de la Filhole and Halles de Marmande offer particularly tangible points of reference.

Renaissance and sacred art

The Église Notre-Dame de Marmande was built in the 13th to 14th centuries and is an example of Southern Gothic architecture. Its complex includes a 16th-century cloister and a Renaissance garden. The cloister was built in 1540 during the French Renaissance and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1875. This clearly distinguishes the church’s medieval construction period from the Renaissance phase of the cloister; the garden is also part of the Renaissance complex.

The Chapelle Saint-Benoît in Marmande houses an exceptional painted ceiling, a gilded wooden altarpiece and a series of paintings from the Toulouse school depicting biblical scenes. While Notre-Dame can be understood through its construction period and its cloister and garden, Saint-Benoît is defined by its distinctive interior and biblical subjects. These are two different aspects of Marmande’s sacred architecture.

The Musée Albert Marzelles adds a more recent chapter to the city’s cultural history: after the building was restored, it opened to the public in 1984. This opening belongs to a different period from the medieval church and the Renaissance cloister.

The stage, music and distinctive architectural forms

Théâtre Comœdia offers a varied year-round programme of theatre, music, dance, comedy and performances for young audiences. The performing arts thus complement the historic buildings with a broad stage programme. If you would like to plan a performance into your trip, check the programme in advance to make sure the dates suit your stay.

The Kiosque de Maré adds its own architectural accent: inaugurated in 1909, this bandstand is designed in the Art Nouveau style. Its octagonal concrete structure imitates branches. Its clear geometric form thus meets an organically imitated motif. Alongside the Southern Gothic church and Renaissance cloister, the Kiosque showcases another, distinctly different design idea.

Urban green space, walking routes and local produce

Plaine de la Filhole is a green recreational area located five minutes from Marmande city centre. Its facilities include walking paths, mini golf, a skate park and a free public beach. Seasonal lifeguard supervision may vary. The area may be temporarily closed during high water or major events; take these conditions into account when planning your visit.

There is also a walking route for exploring Marmande that can be completed in less than 1.5 hours. This makes it a convenient option for a shorter city visit.

The Halles de Marmande on Place du Marché are open year-round. They include shops selling fruit and vegetables, poultry, fish, meat, baked goods and local products. Their focus differs from that of the architectural and performance venues: here, food and regional produce take centre stage. For travellers who would like to include local products in their explorations alongside culture and time outdoors, the market offers another practical point of reference.
