The lac marin de Port d’Albret stretches across Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains and Soustons. Its beach, supervised during the season, provides access to the Atlantic in an area sheltered from the waves. Check the supervision dates before your trip. The area’s heritage also shapes the town: Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains is part of the Site Inscrit des Etangs Landais Sud, a nationally recognised designation that reflects the area’s diverse heritage values.

Beach, Nature and Trails

On the island in the lac marin, a marked nature trail runs through the southern section, where you can discover the local flora and fauna. Access restrictions help protect wildlife; please observe them when visiting. If you would rather focus on forest trails than the island surroundings, try the Sentier de la Palombière, one of two forest discovery trails created by the municipality in Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains.

The other routes also have different connections to the town. A section of La Vélodyssée passes through Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains. The Mail André Rigal, by contrast, is a pedestrian promenade that connects the town centre with the lac marin along the Courant de Moïsan. This means a route through the municipality and a promenade between two specific parts of town sit alongside the nature and forest discovery trails.

Church, Arenas and Events

The Église Saint-Clément dates from 1632; its nave contains paintings depicting biblical scenes. The Arènes Joseph Laudouat were built in 1964. They host bullfighting events without killing, Landes-style courses landaises, concerts and other festive events. Dates vary, so check the current programme if an event is important to your trip.

The Fronton de Vieux-Boucau hosts Basque pelota demonstrations. Other events are also held there regularly throughout the year; their dates can vary too. The church, arenas and fronton offer different cultural attractions: historic paintings, festive events and Basque pelota.

Every year during the February school holidays, the town celebrates the Fête de la Coustille et du bois flotté. It is based on the old tradition of collecting things washed up on the beach by the ocean. Between February and April, the travelling French-language chanson festival Chantons sous les pins also stops in Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains each year. Dates and programmes can vary for both recurring events; check the latest details before your trip.

Local History and Seasonal Travel

Plecq is also part of the coast’s history: the Adour’s former mouth at Plecq remained there until 1578. That year, the river was diverted towards Bayonne, causing Plecq to lose its harbour. This local history adds a story of change to the river mouth to a visit to the church and event venues.

In July and August, the free Petit train de vos vacances runs between the town centre, beaches and fronton. This is a seasonal transport service; operating days and frequency may vary. If you would like to use it, check the timetable for your travel dates. Together with the Mail André Rigal, it offers a practical way to get your bearings locally, although the promenade and train are different modes of transport connecting different places.
