Saubrigues offers a range of things to discover: the Jardin des Barthes, with eight garden areas and 2,500 different plants; the Marais d’Orx wetland; and historic details at the Church of Saint-Pierre. For planning, it helps to distinguish between the different ways to visit: a guided garden tour that requires a reservation, a nature area with free access, a hiking route and cultural events in July.

Garden Spaces at the Jardin des Barthes

The Jardin des Barthes covers five hectares, is divided into eight themed areas and includes 2,500 different plants. During a visit, the route takes you through a Mediterranean garden and a rose garden, the Caradoc alley, three exotic gardens, the Canopée tropical jungle and a vegetable garden. Different garden styles and themes alternate along the route, from the rose garden to the tropical area. Visitors with a particular interest in gardens will find a dedicated focus for their stay in Saubrigues.

Guided tours are offered by prior reservation. If you want to include a tour as a fixed part of your trip, arrange your reservation in advance. This is an important difference from the freely accessible Marais d’Orx nature area: the two visits offer not only different landscapes, but also different planning requirements.

Wetland and Hiking Route

The 774-hectare Marais d’Orx comprises wet meadows, reed and sedge beds, and damp scrubland and woodland. Its area spans Orx, Labenne, Saubrigues and Saint-André-de-Seignanx. Saubrigues is therefore one of the four municipalities whose territories the nature area includes. The Marais d’Orx is freely accessible and has step-free access. An educational trail with wooden boardwalks and information panels, along with observation points, helps visitors find their way around the area.

Another way to discover the landscape is the Circuit de Navachon. The 10.8-kilometre hiking route starts in Saubrigues and is rated easy. It passes through damp woodlands, open landscapes and inhabited areas. The nature attractions thus offer clear differences to consider when choosing between them: the Marais focuses on wetlands, an educational trail and observation points, while the Circuit offers a hiking route with a stated length and difficulty rating.

Festival and Church History

Every July, the municipality of Saubrigues holds the “Rencontres Enchantées” festival, which has been running since 2003. It is aimed at children and families and features live theatre and stage performances. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival visit, check the current event dates in advance.

The parish church of Saint-Pierre also offers specific points of historical and architectural interest. Its bell was cast in 1810 by bell founder Jean Delestan (1762–1828). The exterior of the Romanesque apse features 21 corbels decorated with animal and plant motifs, as well as crouching figures. Sylvain initiated the church’s restoration and expansion during his tenure from 1871 to 1897.

These attractions offer different focuses to consider when planning your trip: a garden walk, nature trails and observation points, a festival in July or details of the church’s architecture.
