A medieval half-timbered house, a 19th-century church and two circular routes of different lengths give Gabarret a varied character. You can get to know the town through its architectural history, plan walks by Lac de Jouandet, or choose longer routes through the heritage of the Gabardan and the surrounding countryside. For planning, the routes differ in specific ways: they are 11.9 and 15.6 kilometres long, respectively, and an average duration is also provided for the longer route.

Half-timbered houses and church history

The Maison du Gabardan is in the centre of Gabarret. Dating from 1456, this medieval house is built with half-timbering and terracotta tiles. It is one of the few local monuments to have survived the Wars of Religion. The Maison serves as a showcase for local food and crafts, an exhibition venue, and a tourist office. Check its current opening hours before visiting.

The Église Saint-Luperc offers another perspective on the town’s history, with a much later building: the present-day church was built between 1856 and 1864. Materials from the medieval tower may have been reused, particularly from its vaulted portal. The Maison, dating from 1456, and the present-day church thus represent different periods of construction; the reuse of older materials in the church remains a possibility, not a certainty.

Circular routes by distance and character

The A Gabarret, nature et patrimoine circular route starts in Gabarret, is 15.6 kilometres long, and has an average duration of 4 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, it passes through the heritage of the Gabardan, follows a former railway line converted into a Green Way, and crosses varied landscapes. The route brings together historical and scenic impressions in a single loop.

The Gabarret – Circuit d'Escalans circular route is shorter, at 11.9 kilometres, and can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike. Together, the two routes offer a clear comparison in terms of distance; the longer route also has an average time estimate. Gabarret is also the starting point of the Voie verte du Marsan et de l’Armagnac. It leads to Mont-de-Marsan and to the access point to the Scandibérique in the Landes. As route infrastructure may change, it is advisable to check the route before setting out.

By the lake and at the Arènes

Lac de Jouandet is well suited to family walks along the lakeshore. Fishing at the lake is regulated; anyone wishing to fish there should check the applicable rules beforehand. Alongside the longer circular routes, this offers a different way to enjoy the outdoors, with a walk along the shore at its heart.

The Arènes de Gabarret also offer a glimpse of local culture: they host both Spanish bullfights and Course landaise. The Arènes can be visited free of charge on Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. As visitor information may change seasonally, check the current opening times before visiting.
