Coudures offers a range of reasons to stay: its bastide was founded as far back as 1305, the Église de Coudures features details from different periods of construction, and La Boucle de Coudures takes you through the landscapes of three valleys. There is also Lac de Coudures, with opportunities for walking and fishing, and tours and tastings at La ferme d’Augerin, available by appointment only. You can therefore explore local history, landscapes and individual activities as separate highlights of your trip.
Bastide History and Architecture
In 1305, the Sire de Lescun founded Coudures as a bastide on the lands of Edward II, without his permission. The founder, date and circumstances are part of the town’s history and give the bastide a specific historical context.
The Église de Coudures underwent extensive alterations between 1890 and 1897. It was given three marble altars and stained-glass windows based on designs by Viollet-le-Duc. Its Gothic vault also tells of a sequence of construction: it was built after the walls of the nave had been raised. The furnishings and construction offer two different perspectives on the church: the altars and windows reflect its alteration, while the vault is linked to changes made to the nave walls.
Another architectural landmark is the Arènes Jean Chicoy in Coudures. Dating from 1947, they were built in the traditional rectangular concrete style of the Courses landaises. The Course landaise is also part of the local scene: it is one of the activities held at the Arènes de Coudures.
Landscapes and Activities
La Boucle de Coudures takes you through the landscapes of the Adour, Bahus and Gabas valleys. From the plateau, the loop offers fine views of the rolling slopes of the Chalosse. The route therefore combines a broad view of the landscape with specific viewpoints from the plateau.
The trail surface and route character are also important for planning: La Boucle runs mostly along unpaved paths through wooded areas and is considered a challenging mountain biking route. Bear these features in mind if you are considering the loop for your plans. As trail conditions can change, check their current status in advance if it is important to your plans.
Fountain, Lake and Local Produce
The Fontaine et le lavoir de Coudures are located on the Chemin de Brameloup. The fountain dates from 1825 and was first restored in 1840; the washhouse built beside it followed in 1842–1843. The site thus presents a clear sequence, from the fountain to its first restoration and then the construction of the washhouse. The surroundings have benches and a table and are located on a hiking trail. These details make the site a tangible point of reference for local history and route planning.
At Lac de Coudures, you can go for walks and fish, except on the dam. Black bass fishing is subject exclusively to a catch-and-release rule. This species-specific requirement should be distinguished from the restriction on fishing from the dam. As fishing regulations can change, check the current rules before heading out to fish.
La ferme d’Augerin combines a visit with local produce: ducks are fed whole-kernel maize there, and homemade foie gras is produced. Tours and tastings are available by prior appointment only. Be sure to arrange a time in advance; arrangements may change.
