Brocas reveals some distinctive sides: the history of work and materials at the Musée des Forges, protected natural areas and easy walks. There is also an arena, archaeological remains and local traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different themes and time frames, so you can decide which aspects matter most for your stay.

Musée des Forges and Arènes de l'Estrigon

The Musée des Forges is housed in a former mill. It focuses on the lives and work of workers in the Landes département during the 19th century and displays an extensive collection of historic cast-iron objects. This brings two distinct perspectives together: social history and the history of materials. If you are interested in the history of work or old cast-iron objects, the museum offers a concrete starting point for choosing cultural activities in Brocas.

The Arènes de l'Estrigon can accommodate up to 1,600 seated spectators. Free guided tours are available on request. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, be sure to request one; it is available only on request. The capacity gives an idea of the arena’s size, while the guided tour offers a separate way to learn more about the site.

Traces of history and local tradition

Remains of a Gallo-Roman villa lie east of the Estrigon. The Fontaine Saint-Jean-Baptiste offers a different perspective on the history of the area: according to local tradition, a ritual was associated with it on Saint John’s Day, June 24, between midnight and dawn. The fountain’s iron-rich water is also linked to local healing beliefs. This is a local tradition, not a medical recommendation. The villa, fountain and museum represent different themes to consider when deciding what to focus on during your stay.

Lagoons and protected areas

The Brocas lagoons form a 6-hectare protected natural area. These are small habitats isolated within the pine landscape, with a wide variety of amphibians and dragonflies. The area’s size is one of its features, alongside the distinctive description of its habitats and biodiversity. The Étang des Forges is another named site with protected status: it is covered by the Natura 2000 designation, is part of a regional nature park and is a classified site.

Comparing two easy walks

For a direct comparison of how much time to allow, consider two easy walks. “Une balade à Brocas” is 5 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The circular route “A Brocas à pied, sur les traces d’une occupation ancienne” covers 12.2 kilometres and takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Both routes are described as easy, but they differ considerably in length. The longer route is 7.2 kilometres longer, and the approximate times differ by around 50 minutes. This makes it easier to weigh up the time required for each walk. The longer circular route’s name refers to earlier settlement.

Cultural programme

The Café associatif Cercle des Travailleurs regularly hosts concerts, communal meals and various cultural activities. Individual events may change, so if you have a particular concert or meal in mind, check the dates in advance. These community activities complement the museum and history themes with a different cultural offering in Brocas.
