As a travel destination, Saint-Front-La-Rivière brings together château history, church architecture, an arboretum and views over the Dronne Valley. This offers several ways to shape a stay: historic architecture, garden landscapes or views of the valley.

Château History and Heritage Protection

Château Saulnier’s building history unfolded in two stages. In 1454, the construction of the large round tower transformed a fortified house into a château; in the 16th century, the present château was rebuilt. Since 6 November 2015, Château Saulnier, its courtyard with well, the entire gardens, the orchard, the canal, the avenue and the meadow have been listed as historic monuments.

The three châteaux have distinct historical reference points: at Saulnier, the focus is on alteration and rebuilding; at la Renaudie, on the 14th-century fortress layout; while the entire Pommier complex is tentatively attributed to the 15th century. The listing dates, by contrast, concern heritage protection, not the construction period.

Château de la Renaudie has the layout of a 14th-century fortress, with four towers of different sizes, and has been listed as a historic monument since 3 October 1946. Inside, a Renaissance tower preserves two sculpted supports from a Gothic fireplace and the upper part of a Renaissance window. This brings elements from different periods together in specific architectural features. At the same time, Château de la Renaudie is a private residence that occasionally welcomes visitors. Confirm visiting arrangements in advance before planning a visit.

The façades and roofs of Château du Pommier have been listed as historic monuments since 4 December 1959. The entire building complex appears to date from the 15th century. The dating is therefore tentative; the listing specifically applies to the façades and roofs.

Church, Arboretum and Valley Views

The Romanesque Eglise Saint Front also has several clearly identified architectural features: a vaulted choir, a 16th-century nave and a bell gable. Its Romanesque classification and the later date of the nave provide two different points of reference. The choir, nave and bell gable offer specific features for understanding the church’s architecture.

The Jardin des Peyroties shifts the focus from buildings to gardens and tree diversity. The arboretum, covering just under two hectares, lies in the grounds of a Chartreuse dating from the mid-19th century. It contains several centuries-old chestnut trees and lime trees, as well as an oak, an ash and a spruce; overall, the arboretum includes more than 200 tree and shrub species. The old specimens and the large number of species provide different points of interest: individual notable trees on the one hand, and the diversity of woody plants on the other.

The Boucle de la Renaudie offers views over the Dronne Valley. This adds a distinct landscape perspective to the architectural and garden details. The route offers a different way of seeing Saint-Front-La-Rivière from the château grounds: here, the valley view takes centre stage.
