Saint-Crépin-De-Richemont offers three distinct ways to explore: sacred architecture and imagery at Église Saint-Crépin, the history of Château de Richemont associated with Brantôme, and an interpretive trail exploring the history of the meulières. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip, between cultural themes and a route with a stated length, walking time and elevation gain. The details can help you tailor your stay to your interests without having to fit every theme into a single itinerary.

Church: architectural form and imagery

Église Saint-Crépin has a four-bay nave, a choir with a flat east end, and a north aisle. The vaulting appears to date from no earlier than the 14th century. The church’s spatial layout and the cautiously worded dating of its vaulting can therefore be considered as separate aspects.

The furnishings also place specific imagery alongside the architecture. The church contains a carved wooden altarpiece from the 18th century, decorated with scenes of the Nativity. The object “tabernacle, 4 chandeliers” includes depictions of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi. These themes complement one another: the altarpiece shows scenes of the Nativity, while the two Adorations take up other motifs from this subject area. Visitors interested in sacred art can therefore explore both an architectural and a visual perspective.

Meulières: history and route details

The Site et sentier d’interprétation des meulières tells the story of a labyrinth of quarries, with stone relics from Roman times and later periods. The trail is 2.7 kilometres long, takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to walk, and has an elevation gain of 100 metres. It is freely accessible. These details offer several useful planning points: the route length, an approximate time frame and the elevation gain. Check the route details again before your trip.

A specific starting point is given for the Boucle de Saint-Crépin de Richemont: the trail sign is above the town hall, in the large car park. If you plan to walk this loop, you can use these two local landmarks to find the start.

Château de Richemont and Brantôme

At Château de Richemont, architectural history meets the biography of Pierre de Bourdeilles. The château consists of two wings set at right angles to each other. Pierre de Bourdeille, known as Brantôme, began building it in 1564, wrote his works there and lived at the château until his death. The building’s form and this connection to his life and work offer different ways to understand the site’s history: the wings define its appearance, while Brantôme’s work provides its historical point of reference.

Guided tours of the château are available and last about 40 minutes on average. Visitor access is seasonal. Before your trip, check whether a tour is available during your travel dates.
