Plazac combines a distinctive limestone landscape with trails and a rich local history. The Côte de Jor lies on the right bank of the Vézère; the church, fortified complex, forge and Jardin d'Esprit Médiéval represent different historical themes. If you are looking for accommodation in Plazac, you can plan your trip around these highlights: nature, hiking, architectural history or local traditions.
Landscape and nature: limestone slope, river and biodiversity
The Côte de Jor is a sunny limestone slope on the right bank of the Vézère. To protect its flora, it is designated both a Natura 2000 site and a Type I ZNIEFF. The Vimont, a small tributary of the Vézère, also crosses the Plazac area from north to south. The slope and watercourse thus represent two distinct landscape features: the Côte as a protected limestone habitat, and the Vimont as a north–south line through the area. Nature observation also has a specific focus: the marsh fritillary (Cuivré des marais) has been recorded in the commune and is protected at national level. This record adds a species-conservation perspective to the nature theme.
Hiking trails with different features
There are three different options to consider for hiking. The GR 36 long-distance trail crosses the Plazac area for approximately ten kilometres or runs along its boundary. The Boucle des Pleniers is a circular route. By contrast, the Boucle du moulin à vent focuses on a succession of landscapes: it leads from sunny plateaus down to Plazac via shady forest paths. This makes it possible to choose a route based on specific features: its circular layout, the approximate length of the GR 36, or the transition from plateau to forest and the descent to Plazac.
Architectural history and traces of the past
Plazac’s church forms a complex ensemble with a 24-metre-high main tower. The fortified complex of Plazac was designed for defence and withstood an attack by the Count of Périgord, Archambaud VI, in 1397. Another historical trace leads to the forge: founded around 1645, it cast cannons for the Royal Navy. At the Croix du Bousquet, a cross bears an inscription dated 1451. Together, these sites offer different perspectives on Plazac: a church complex, a history of defence, historic metalworking and a dated inscription.
The Jardin d'Esprit Médiéval, created in 2003, adds the former uses of plants to these themes. It cultivates plants that were used in the Middle Ages for food, healthcare and domestic life. This brings everyday life into focus alongside architecture and crafts.
Markets and festivals throughout the year
Plazac’s food market takes place on Fridays. Check the market day before your trip if you plan to visit. The Fête du Village is celebrated each year on the third weekend of June; the exact date may vary from year to year. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the date for the year in question.
